HyundaiHe recently introduced us to Santa Fe 2021, the benchmark SUV in its SUV range. Although it is a new generation, since it employs a new platform and represents a revolution in terms of engines and technology, the Korean firm prefers to classify it as a renewal compared to the 2018 model due to its aesthetic similarity. Something to which brands are not accustomed to us since in tale they can boast of evolutionary leap.
The new third generation platform allows to offer a Hyundai Santa Fe bigger, livable and capable than ever. It is 15 millimeters longer than its predecessor, 10 mm wider and 5 mm taller, with total measurements of 4.78 meters in length, 1.90 m wide Y 1.68 high.
The battle measures 2.76 meters, which allows offering excellent habitability with 7 seats as standard, without taking space away from a generous 634-liter boot (with 5 seats). This is possible thanks to the new platform, which in the hybrid version allows the battery to be fitted under the passenger seat, while in the PHEV variant they are hidden in the floor of the vehicle, under the driver and passenger seats.
This first contact with the Hyundai Santa Fe 2021 had a special component, since the SUV celebrates its twentieth anniversary, a time in which more than 5 million units have been sold worldwide, since together with the i30 they are the only global cars of the Korean brand.
2021 Hyundai Santa Fe design
As we say, the Hyundai Santa Fe 2021 he is very conservative in his design, with lines that closely resemble those of the 2018 model. Of course, this latest evolution offers a more forceful and sophisticated look, largely thanks to a more robust front end that is very reminiscent of American cars. This is composed of a large grille and slanted headlights and a T-shaped daylight signature with LED technology.
The profile is where the new Santa Fe changes least, only highlighting the design of the new wheels. The rear, meanwhile, sports a new reflective band that joins more modern and horizontal-looking optics.
As a novelty in Santa Fe 2021, there is a Deluxe Package (standard on Style trim) featuring a specific 20-inch wheel design and front and rear lower bumpers and side skins that match the body paint color, rather than matte black. The bodywork has a color palette of 9 options.
The interior of new hyundai suv also keeps a lot of the forms of its predecessor, but conveys a lot more sense of perceived quality, thanks to the materials used, better adjustments and the notable presence of cutting-edge technology. The interior admits 4 different designs and combinations of materials: two-tone Dark Beige, two-tone black, two-tone Camel Nappa leather (Style finish) and two-tone Light Gray Nappa leather (Style finish). The last one was the one we tested during the presentation and we have to say that the feel of the nappa on both the A-pillars and the ceiling is simply exceptional.
As has become customary in the sector, the interior is chaired by big screens. On the dashboard stands a touch function and 10.35 inch that brings together practically all the information of the vehicle. A digitization that is not at odds with functionality, as Hyundai has retained analogue buttons on the floating center console for the vast majority of vehicle controls, including gear shifting with Shift by wire technology.
Another big screen of 12.3 inch appears in front of the driver in a instrumentation Fully digital and configurable, in which all the information related to driving is reflected, and which as a curiosity allows to visualize in the left or right sphere, depending on whether the indicator is selected on each side, the view of the camera that is located on the outside rear view mirror. On this instrumentation is also displayed the information of an advanced 8-inch Head-Up Display.
Engine range for the new Santa Fe
Regarding the engines of Santa Fe 2021, the highlight is that this model becomes the first Hyundai to mount the hybrid powertrain and hybrid-plug-in ‘Smartstream’. This combines the 1.6 TGDI petrol engine associated with a six-speed automatic transmission and torque converter, with another electric motor to jointly offer 265 hp of power and 350 Nm of torque, which are transmitted to all four wheels. In 100% electric mode the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV have 58 kilometers of autonomy thanks to a 13.8 kWh battery that can be recharged in about 2 hours with the 7.2 kW charger which is offered as standard.
Another mechanical option of the new Hyundai Santa Fe is the version conventional hybrid, which also combines the same 1.6-liter 180 hp gasoline engine coupled to the same automatic transmission as the PHEV, with a 60 hp electric motor that is powered by a small 1.5 kWh battery. The joint power is 230 CV, and offers a couple of 350 Nm which can be exclusively transferred to the front axle to both axles in the variant 4×4.
This engine is the one we tested during touchdown that we had in the presentation of the model, and the truth is that we liked it a lot since it is able to move with ease the almost 2 tons that the SUV weighs, and it also does it in a pleasant and progressive way. This propulsion system does not stand out for anything in space but it is correct in everything, and offers an excellent harmony between performance and consumption, since during the journey it left us an average of approximately 7 liters, which is more than remarkable for a vehicle of this size. For all this, together with its self-recharging capacity and the acquisition price, We believe that it will be the star option in Spain.
The third mechanical possibility offered by the new Santa Fe is an engine 2.2 CRDi diesel with 200 hp and 440 Nm of torque which is associated with an 8-speed double-clutch automatic transmission. This variant is also available with front-wheel drive and 4×4.
Another novelty of the Hyundai Santa Fe 2021 it is precisely the new driving modes for the 4×4 versions, which are added to those offered as standard already from the front-wheel drive models. The driver can select both the driving mode and the type of terrain on which he will drive. Just turn the dial to choose the mode that best suits your needs: Comfort, for everyday driving; Eco, for optimum fuel efficiency; Sport to get the most out of the benefits; Y Smart to automatically adjust gearshift intervals according to the latest driving patterns. And to all this is added the “Terrain Driving Mode”With which you can choose: Snow, Arena Y Barro, in case we specifically travel through any of these lands.
Of course, the new Santa Fe also incorporates the latest in technology, as the connection of Android Auto y Apple CarPlay Android Autototally wireless, smartphone replication on the center screen, and cutting-edge connectivity features such as Onboard Connectivity Services Bluelink, which allow you to control the vehicle from the phone or with your voice. Included with the 10.25˝ touchscreen navigation system is a free five-year subscription to the Hyundai Live Services, which offer real-time traffic information, weather forecast and parking finder, among many other things.
Similarly, Hyundai’s flagship enjoys all the maximum security. New state-of-the-art security features of Hyundai SmartSense and advanced systems assisted driving they put the new Santa Fe on the same level as high-end competitors. From automatically braking to avoid collisions and staying in your lane, to detecting approaching vehicles from the blind spot, this system alerts you to potential hazards in your environment while driving.
