NHC forecasts Tropical Storm Ian will hit Florida as a Category 3 hurricane

ALL RIGHT. AS YOU CAN SEE, IAN HAS FORM THIS EVENING. IT IS MOVING OFF TOWARDS THE WEST NORTHWEST AT A LITTLE SLOWER PACE TODAY, DOWN FROM 15 TO 12 MILES, HOUR WINDS UP TO 40. PRESSURE DOWN FROM 1006 DOWN TO 1005. AND WITH TIME, IT GOES OVER THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN AND BEGINS TO MAKE THAT TURN. THIS IS WHERE THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IN ADVISORY TONIGHT MENTIONED THE POTENTIAL HERE FOR FOR RAPID INTENSIFY LOCATION ONCE IT GETS PAST GRAND CAYMAN AND MOVES OVER CUBA. LET’S TAKE A LOOK NOW AT 7 A.M. ON SUNDAY. 50 MILE AN HOUR TROPICAL STORM FROM THERE OVER GEORGETOWN IN 85 MILE AN HOUR HURRICANE, NORTHWEST TIP THERE OF CUBA AGAIN, A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE THEN BECOMING A CATEGORY THREE, JUST SOUTHWEST OF FORT MYERS COMING ASHORE AND A VERY STRONG CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE, POTENTIALLY SOMEWHERE WEST, CENTRAL FLORIDA. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO WATCH AGAIN. 115 IS CAN THREE. SO IT DOES BEGIN WEAKEN ONCE IT COMES ASHORE MODEL HERE YOU CAN SEE HONING IN NOW VERY TIGHTLY NOW ON NORTHWESTERN CUBA. STILL LITTLE SPREAD. AND WE’LL WATCH THIS AS WE GO THROUGH THE UPCOMING WEEKEND BUT KIND OF HONING IN ON THE EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO AND CENTRAL FLORIDA. IN FACT, WHEN WE ZOOM IN AND LOOK AT THE MAJORITY OF THE MODELS TONIGHT, ANYWHERE FROM THE AVIAN TO THE WOLFCAMP THREE, CAT FOUR STORMS THERE, AGAIN TO 100 MILES OFFSHORE. THAT’S WHY WE’RE GOING TO WATCH THIS ONE FOR YOU VERY, VERY CAREFULLY. WE THINK BY LATE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, THIS STORM WILL BE LIFTING UP TO THE NORTH IN THE SO INTENSIFYING THROUGH THE WEEKEND, WATCHING THE MODEL TRENDS FOR YOU ALL WEEKEND LONG ONLINE AND RIGHT HERE ON WESH. AGAIN THE POSITION OF AN EASTERN GULF STORM WOULD CREATE THE GREATEST IMPACTS FOR US RIGHT HERE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. WE’LL LOOK AT SOME OF THOSE MODELS NOW. HERE’S ALEX. YEAH, TONY. SO I DO WANT TO HONE IN HERE ON THE GFS, THE EUROPEAN MODELS. THESE ARE MEAN OF GLOBAL FORECAST MODELS. YOU CAN SEE THEY’RE PRETTY MUCH IN LINE HERE AS WE GO TOWARDS THE CAYMANS, ALSO IN LINE WITH THE HURRICANE TRACK AS WE GO TOWARDS TUESDAY. THIS IS WHERE WE START TO SEE SOME SPLIT EURO BRINGS IT RIGHT OVER SOUTH FLORIDA AND INTO CENTRAL FLORIDA AS WELL. THE GFC KEEPS OFF SHORE, IT CONTINUES TO INTENSIFY AS WE GO IN THIS THURSDAY MORNING. NOTICE YOU’RE ALREADY OFFSHORE. THE GFS MOVING ITS WAY INTO THE PANHANDLE AND INTO THE BIG BEN. SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR PREPS? IT MEANS WE HAVE TO START THINKING ABOUT THAT NOW AS WE GO INTO TOMORROW. AGAIN, CONFIDENCE STILL A LITTLE BIT LOW ON THAT TRACK. SO 200 MILE SPREAD ON DAY FIVE. BUT AS WE GET INTO SUNDAY, WE CONTINUE TO HONE DOWN ON THAT TRACK. THAT’S WHEN YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR HURRICANE KIT TOPPED. IF WE’RE STILL IN THE CONE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA BY HAVE THOSE PREPS FINISHED, BECAUSE BY TUESDAY THOSE WINDS START TO PICK UP. AND THEN BY WEDNESDAY, THAT’S WHEN WE’RE SEEING THE WORST OF THE WEATHER. SO WHEN WE SAY GET THOSE PREPS READY, WAS THAT MEAN? HAVE YOUR SUPPLIES READY? FOOD WATER, BATTERIES, FLASHLIGHT, MEDICATIONS, CLEAR OUT THE LANAI, TIE DOWN THE LOOSE OUTDOOR ITEMS, DRAIN THE POOL, CHECK YOUR FUEL FOR THE GENERATORS AND PROPANE FOR COOKING, AND ALSO FILL UP YOUR CAR AGAIN THE WEEKEND. THE WEATHER’S LOOKING GREAT, SO GET OUTSIDE AND GET THOSE PREPS DONE BECAUSE AS WE INTO MIDWEEK THAT’S WHEN WE CAN BE TRACKING THOSE TROPICAL
