NHL Awards 2021-22: Odds, Best Bets, Predictions for the Hart Trophy

The 2021-22 NHL season is just around the corner, and while awards won’t be handed out for a few months, the debate is already intense over who will take home the hardware.

Last year saw some expected names in Connor McDavid (Hart Trophy), Auston Matthews (Rocket Richard Trophy) and Aleksander Barkov (Selke Trophy). There were a lot of surprises, like Marc-Andre Fleury winning his first Vezina (later he was traded) and second-year defender Adam Fox winning the Norris. A couple of winners went wire-to-wire, including Kirill Kaprizov’s Calder Trophy spin.

What the next season will bring is anyone’s guess, but expect the aforementioned names – and a couple more – to be in the talks. Sporting News breaks the conversation heading into the new season with predictions, odds and the best bets for the Hart Trophy. The award is given to the most valuable player in the league and is voted on by members of the Association of Professional Hockey Writers.

ODDS, PREDICTIONS: Stanley Cup | Calder | Vezina | Norris

Hart Trophy Best Bets

As mentioned below, this is the McDavid trophy to lose, but there are plenty of other guys who could snatch it from him, including our prediction of the dark horse, Auston Matthews. Other guys who could break through include three-time finalist (including the last two cycles) Nathan MacKinnon, 2020 winner and McDavid teammate Leon Draisaitl, and 2019 winner Nikita Kucherov, who missed the entire season last season for a hip injury (yeah, we all know, he played in the postseason). There’s also Alex Ovechkin as he searches for the record of Wayne Gretzky, Conn Smyth winner Andrei Vasilevskiy between the tubes, and American sniper Patrick Kane.

TOP 10 2021-22: Goalkeepers

SN Hart Trophy Dark Horse Prediction: Auston Matthews

Can you call a guy who won the 2021 Rocket Richard Trophy a dark horse? Debatable. But when you have McDavid hitting the ice, really everyone else is a dark horse. The American striker keeps getting better and better. After scoring 47 goals in 70 games in 2019-20, he had 41 in 52 last season. Translation: He almost scored a goal per game (0.79, to be exact). Oh, and she had a bad wrist for most of the season. The Leafs will rely heavily on Matthews’ offensive hit in 2021-22, and is expected to deliver; That said, most Leafs fans will focus on one thing: the postseason.

SN Hart Trophy Prediction: Connor McDavid

It’s Connor McDavid’s world, and we just live in it. At just 24 years old, he won the third Art Ross Trophy of his career (105 points in 56 games) and the second Hart Trophy of his career, this one, as expected, unanimously, in 2021. McDavid is a dynamic force that creates offense. anytime. . His speed is in another world and is driven by his fast steps and feet. How the greasers go is how McDavid goes. According to Hockey Reference, led the NHL in goals created per game (0.66), offensive points participation (10.7) and points participation (13.0) in 2021. There’s nothing stopping McDavid.
