NHL Outdoors in Lake Tahoe: A Guide to Golden Knights vs. Avalanche, Flyers vs. Bruins

The 2021 Winter Classic may have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but outdoor hockey is still alive and well.

But this year’s iteration of an outdoor game hosted by the NHL will be unlike any of the other 30 spins. For the first time, hockey will be played on a golf course. Yes, the days of baseball, soccer, or football stadiums are on hold when the fastest game in the world heads to the grass – the fairway of a par 5, to be exact.

While one significant difference this year is that there will be no fans present, another is that this year’s venue will be the site of two shots. Saturday’s display will feature Golden Knights and Avalanche from the West Division. On Sunday, the East Division Flyers and Bruins will meet.

Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for the 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe Puck Drop.

Where is the 2021 NHL Outdoors played?

Hello Nevada! Silver State will become the 13th US state (plus the District of Columbia) to host an outdoor NHL game.

Located on the 18th hole of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort on the south shore of Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada, the track faces one of the most beautiful settings in sporting history – Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. .

At 6,224 feet above sea level, the venue is the second highest place for an outdoor game. The Avalanche and the Kings met at a height of 6,621 feet in last year’s Stadium Series at Falcon Stadium at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Colorado, by the way, also played in the third highest elevation game when the club hosted Red Wings at 5,200 feet above sea level at Coors Field in Denver in 2016.

Who plays in the 2021 NHL Outdoors?

The Battle Born State will serve as the venue for two fierce rivalries: Avalanche and Golden Knights meet on Saturday, followed by the Flyers and Bruins head-to-head on Sunday.

And although the teams will play in a picturesque setting, there will still be four big points at stake. The Bruins entered the weekend at the top of the East Division, with the Flyers just three points behind. (The Islanders and Capitals, who are tied with the Flyers, will play Saturday.) Vegas will hit the ice just one point behind West leader St. Louis, with third-place Avalanche four points behind the Golden Knights.

Avalanche will also debut its retro reversed t-shirts, which pay tribute to the franchise’s roots as Quebec Nordiques.

Several major players will be missing for the Broad Street Bullies: Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton, Oskar Lindblom, Justin Braun and Captain Claude Giroux are all on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list.

What will Nathan MacKinnon do?

With the game on a golf course, the first intermission of Saturday’s game will showcase, well, golf. Avalanche captain Nathan MacKinnon will head to the adjacent 17th hole, par 3, and swing.

Why? Well, in 2011 Joe Sakic, the Hockey Hall of Famer and now Avalanche GM, made a hole-in-one at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at the same venue. Using an 8-iron, Sakic’s left-handed tee shot needed just two short rebounds before going down.

If MacKinnon does an ace, then the NHL will donate $ 1 million to the NHL / NHLPA Learn to Play program. The only thing he won’t be able to recreate, if it matches his GM’s feat, will be what it looked like Sakic was high-five with all the fans present.

Will there be fans?

During the previous 30 outdoor contests, more than 1.6 million fans braved (mostly) cold stadiums to attend a game of a lifetime. The 2020 Winter Classic had the second-largest crowd in NHL history, with 85,630 fans watching host Stars beat the Predators 4-2 at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, these will be the first outdoor games without the assistance of fans.

What TV channel is the NHL 2021 outdoor games?

The 2021 NHL outdoor games will air on NBC. Mike Tirico will provide play-by-play, while Eddie Olczyk and Brian Boucher will act as analysts.

Who will perform on Saturday?

Green Day will continue their collaboration with the NHL as they premiere their latest song, “Here Comes the Shock,” during the second intermission of Golden Knights-Avs.

At the 2020 NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis, Green Day performed “Fire, Ready, Aim” before the festivities began. The band also rocked Enterprise Center during the second intermission.

The NHL surely expects this year’s performance to be, um, cleaner.
