excitingly, Burkina Faso and Gabon are currently tied 1-1 after extra time in their round of 16 encounter. Gabon saw Sidney Obissa sent off in the 67th minute and was already 1-0 down, but Adama Guira’s own goal in stoppage time put it ahead in the 90th minute.

Preamble

Nigeria’s form in winning Group D of the African Cup of Nations was exemplary: they played three, won three, scored five goals and conceded one. Tunisia’s Covid-19 strike team, on the other hand, started the tournament with a controversial 1-0 loss against Mali. They were also on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline in their third and final Group F match against Gambia. But a 4-0 thrashing of Mauritania, between those two defeats, proved to be enough to advance to the round of 16.

Will the Super Eagles, or the Eagles of Cartago, reach the quarterfinals? The smart money surely has to be in Nigeria taking flight, but this is knockout football, and Tunisia is certainly not a cup. We will see when the teams are revealed to what extent Tunisia has recovered from the Covid cases that devastated its squad. Team news and more coming soon.
