Number 613 of Computer Hoy is already in your kiosk!

On the mottos “Less is more” and “Do more with less”. “Contemporary artistic current that plays with limited elements”. This is how the dictionary of the Spanish language of the Royal Spanish Academy defines, in its first meaning, the term ‘minimalism’. Arguably, a minimalist aesthetic features clean lines, few materials, and a profile that can be described as dramatic in its simplicity. This artistic trend began after the First World War, at the hands of the German architect Mies van der Rohe –after the war, his works went from the traditional neoclassical to the modern style–. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe himself adopted the motto “Less is more” to describe his aesthetic and, in the US of the 1960s and 1970s, it marked a shift towards geometric abstraction.

Already in the XXI century we can find examples of this trend in many fields. Not only artistic, such as sculpture, painting, literature or music, but also in areas such as gastronomy, software, mobile apps and the design of electronic devices, such as mobile phones. And the question is: apart from allowing you to make calls, what functions and features are absolutely essential in a phone? Send SMS? Take pictures? Internet? Pay without contact? What is clear is that phones have more and more control over our lives. More is less: they are time thieves and procrastination tools.

But trying to give users what they need and not what they want is dangerous. Not only because of the possible rejection –would you be willing to lose group messaging apps?–, but also because of the difficulty of maintaining competitive costs. In addition, you should agree on what is necessary and what is not: according to a BankMyCell study, 88% of consumers would rather have unlimited data than calls and SMS. Perhaps the key is, as designer Buckminster Fuller said, “Do more with less.” Which is better, a ‘featured’ phone or a ‘smart’ one? Or to be more clear, a hammer or a Swiss army knife?
