Olympic soccer schedule 2021: full dates, times and television channels to watch the men’s tournament in the USA.

Several of the top soccer-playing nations in the world will compete for gold at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Spain, Argentina, Brazil, France and Germany are the favorites in the men’s soccer tournament, which will present its first prize on Saturday, August 7.

But surprises are the norm in the men’s tournament where teams must submit a roster of players aged 24 or younger, with the exception of three players who may be older (this age limit is usually 23, but has been changed since they were postponed the Olympics for one year). This rule was formally established in 1992 to differentiate competition from the Men’s World Cup as the IOC opened Olympic participation to professional athletes.

While Spain and Brazil still have an under-24 roster (Spain will have six players from their Euro 2021 semi-finalist squad), some big-name contenders will invariably not survive the group stage, where a total of 16 teams will. be reduced to eight quarterfinals. The single elimination knockout rounds will take us to the gold and bronze medal matches.

Host Japan will be hoping for a chance to win a medal, while Mexico, the 2012 men’s soccer gold medalist, could have another memorable run in them. Honduras has a strong record of performing at the Olympics, while Ivory Coast and Egypt dream of becoming Africa’s first gold medal winners since Cameroon in 2000.

Format of the men’s Olympic soccer tournament

The men’s soccer tournament begins with a group stage that eliminates half the field of 16 teams. The remaining eight advance to the quarterfinals and at the beginning of the knockout rounds.

Group stage: The 16 teams are divided into four groups called Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. The top two teams after the free-for-all group game automatically advance to the quarterfinals.

Here’s how they progress: The group stage awards teams three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The teams are classified by points, with the first tiebreakers being (1) the goal difference and (2) the goals scored in that order. If the teams are still tied after the second tiebreaker, there is other predetermined criteria to separate teams.

Knockout rounds: The top two teams in each group (eight in total) advance to a fixed group, single elimination knockout round that begins with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches.
