In addition, in the last hours 72 residents and 41 new workers have tested positive for covid in the Valencian Community, although Health does not specify how many of these infections have occurred in the province. They are currently under active surveillance of sanitary control 11 residences in the Community, four in the province of Alicante.

One of the last centers that has registered cases of covid is the Jubalcoy de Elche residence, which serves people with functional diversity. This center has registered a coronavirus outbreak which, at the moment, affects about twenty people. After performing diagnostic tests, a total of 14 users have tested positive and 6 of them remain admitted to the General Hospital of Elche, according to sources close to the center managed by the Ministry of Equality and Inclusive Policies. The rest of the infected people are 6 workers who remain isolated, while they are awaiting the result of PCR tests of other people who also present some type of symptoms.

186 people have died in residences since March

In the first wave of the pandemic it was a Alcoy nursing home the one that accumulated the highest number of deaths from covid, specifically 73 of the 140 residents. In another nursing home in the city of Alicante, 12 deaths were also registered in the first wave of the pandemic. Already in the second wave, 11 people died in a residence in Pilar de la Horadada and two outbreaks in each residence in Elda and Petrer at the beginning of November affected 71 and 32 elderly respectively. In Elda’s case, two people died.

The situation experienced in some geriatric residences has led the Department of Equality, on which these centers depend, to announce its intention to revert to the public system the Alcoy residence in which the largest outbreak registered in the province occurred and to impose sanctions to companies that do not present contingency plans to prevent coronavirus infections among residents.

Finally, the situation of the Altabix nursing home It has crept into the concerns of the mayor of Elche, Carlos González. The Síndic de Greuges, Ángel Luna, has recommended to the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies that the public center, which is managed by a private company, intervene to resolve a long list of deficiencies such as the lack of human and material resources, as well as lack of hygiene in the facilities.

688 total deaths from covid. These are figures that, for the moment, the pandemic has left in the province.

The mayor of Elche, following Ángel Luna’s recommendations, affirmed yesterday that he is going to contact the Minister for Equality and Inclusive Policies, Mónica Oltra, to “demand urgent action to correct an inadmissible situation.” Carlos González expressed his concern “for the elements that emerge from the resolution of the Síndic de Greuges”, which he has come to consider as “especially serious”. For this reason, the councilor from Elche said that “we cannot put ourselves in profile and we must be demanding so that the care provided to the elderly in the residence is of the highest quality.”

Under the control of Health until the pandemic ends

The nursing homes for the elderly in the Valencian Community are, while the pandemic lasts, under the control of the Ministry of Health. A resolution published last June allows the Consell to continue intervening in public and private centers as long as necessary. The Ministry maintains three levels of surveillance (0, 1 and 2) for the social and health centers and the figure of the control commission, to which the centers must report and which integrates those responsible for the centers with the management health departments, among other figures.
