Who is ‘Hank the Tank’? Thieving 500-pound bear causing controversy in California community

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KRON) – Hank the Tank is bigger than the average bear. Weighing 500 pounds, the black bear was nicknamed by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for its enormous size, partly achieved by breaking into dozens of homes and feasting on homeowners’ groceries. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is considering its options for how to handle Hank. The bear is beloved by many longtime local residents who believe in the importance of co-existing with all of Tahoe’s wildlife. “He’s famous. We’re trying to save him, even though he’s a troublemaker,” Lake Tahoe resident Deanne Belardino told KRON. Hank the Tank has broken into 28 homes and prompted more than 100 calls to police over the past seven months. The bear was recorded lumbering arou...

It’s time to admit it: Mitt Romney was right about Russia | CNN Politics

Greg Nash/Pool/Getty Images CNN —   A decade ago, Mitt Romney went on CNN and made a statement that was widely perceived as a major mistake. “Russia, this is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe,” Romney, who would be the Republican presidential nominee in the 2012 race against President Barack Obama, told Wolf Blitzer in March of that year. “They — they fight every cause for the world’s worst actors.” Obama and his team pounced on the comment, insisting that it showed Romney was hopelessly out of touch when it came to the threats facing the US. In the third presidential d...

In the federal case over George Floyd’s killing, former officers put the Minneapolis police on trial

Thao said that, although he had never used such a maneuver, what Chauvin was doing looked like something he had repeatedly seen demonstrated at the police academy, contrary to testimony from Minneapolis officers who said that kind of restraint wasn’t taught or sanctioned. And Thao had the photos to prove it, courtesy a disc of images he said had been given to him and other cadets by the Minneapolis Police Department to “have some memories of our academy days.”Those “memories,” introduced as evidence, included several images of Minneapolis trainees practicing arrest techniques by pressing their knees into a prone subject’s neck, not unlike how Chauvin restrained Floyd. In at least one of the pictures shown to the jury, an instructor was seen standing to the side, not intervening, as Thao...

Supreme Court to decide if web designer can decline same-sex weddings

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will decide whether a web designer may decline to make wedding websites for same-sex couples in a case that could have sweeping implications in the battle over LGBTQ rights. Ever since the nation's highest court handed down a landmark ruling in 2015 legalizing same-sex marriagethe justices have been confronted with a litany of lawsuits involving wedding photographers, bakers and other matrimonial businesses that claim serving same-sex couples would violate their constitutional rights. The court has so far largely dodged the fundamental question presented by those cases: Whether the decision to deny service to LGBTQ customers because of religious objections is illegal discrimination – or is, instead, protected by the First Amendment.Lorie ...
