California aims to triple electric car sales by 2026, phase out gas cars

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California wants electric vehicle sales to triple in the next four years to 35% of all new car purchases, an aggressive target set as part of the goal to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars by the middle of the next decade. The California Air Resources Board's proposal would slowly raise the sale of new cars that are electric, hydrogen-powered or plug-in hybrids to 100% by 2035. About 11% of all new passenger car sales happen nationally in California, giving the state significant influence over the auto market. Californians would still be allowed to drive gas-powered cars and sell used ones, meaning planet-warming emissions will still spew from the state's roadways. The hoped-for boost in electric vehicle sales will also require a major increase in charging stati...

Missouri governor responds to criticism of state’s handling of summer meals program

A spokeswoman for Gov. Mike Parson defended Missouri's handling of its free summer meals program Wednesday, a day after NBC News revealed the state was the only one not to allow to-go meals this summer — leading to a dramatic drop in food distributed to kids.An exclusive NBC News analysis based on responses from all 50 states showed Missouri was the only one not to opt in to a federal waiver that permitted program operators to offer grab-and-go meals. The pandemic-era benefit vastly expanded access to the Summer Food Service Program by giving families the flexibility to take meals home rather than requiring kids to eat on site at set times. Those who ran the program across the state said Missouri's decision not to take advantage of the relaxed rules resulted in up to 97% fewer meals d...

Researchers discover sprawling pro-US social media influence campaign

Facebook and Twitter, in a first, have cracked down on a series of covert influence campaigns designed to spread pro-US sentiment abroad, researchers announced Wednesday.A report, jointly published by Stanford University and Graphika, a social media analytics company that works with Facebook and Twitter, found hundreds of inauthentic accounts designed to spread pro-US views on current events to users in the Middle East and central Asia. It's unclear who was behind the pro-US campaigns, which had operated since 2017, though Facebook determined that the account activity originated in the US, and Twitter that it was from the US and the UK “Consistently across the campaigns we saw them advancing narratives in support of the US and allies, and particularly criticalizing Russia, China and Iran...

Archives asked for records after Trump lawyer agreed they should be returned, email says

About two dozen boxes of presidential records stored in then-president Donald Trump's White House residence were not returned to the National Archives and Records Administration in the final days of his term even after Archives officials were told by a Trump lawyer that the documents should be given back, according to an email from the top lawyer at the record-keeping agency.“It is also our understanding that roughly two dozen boxes of original presidential records were kept in the Residence of the White House over the course of President Trump's last year in office and have not been transferred to NARA, despite a determination by Pat Cipollone in the final days of the administration that they need to be,” wrote Gary Stern, the agency's chief counsel, in an email to Trump lawyers in May...

Corporate America is so angry about Biden’s student loan cancellation. I wonder why

This week, President Joe Biden made good on his campaign pledge and vowed to cancel $10,000 in student federal loan debt for borrowers with an annual income of less than $125,000. For the 45 million Americans still crippled with student loan debt, at a time of increasing cost of living, this is not nearly enough. If we were able to cancel Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) debts for business, you’d think the funds could be found to cancel student loans too.PPP was instituted by former President Donald Trump as a means for businesses to pay their workforce and cover overheads during the Covid pandemic. The debt from those loans was ultimately forgiven. The average loan equated to $107,000 per business, totalling a colossal $800 billion in low-interest loans altogether. Beneficiaries inc...

PSV vs Rangers LIVE: Latest updates from Champions League qualifying

RANGERS have work to do if they're to make the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2010. The Gers drew 2-2 with former European champions PSV Eindhoven last week as they failed to make the most of home advantage at Ibrox. That means they'll need to get a result in the Netherlands if they are to qualify, following an Armando Obispo equaliser for Ruud van Nistelrooy's side. But Rangers are set to benefit from there being no away goals rule in this year's Champions League, meaning there will be a penalty shootout if the aggregate score remains 2-2 rather than PSV going through automatically.
