Just a yellow?
This is not the type of immersion that you will normally see on a soccer field.
A game in Poland’s fifth division on Sunday between the Olimpia Elbląg reserve team and PISA Primavera Barczewo was interrupted by a paratrooper who landed in the midfield circle right in the middle of the game.
Everyone on the ground handled the strange situation quite calmly. The players rushed out of the way of the field invader in midair, the announcer laughed, and the referee responded by showing the paratrooper a yellow card.
That’s a flawless comic moment on the referee’s part. He just walks up to the skydiver like he’s the most normal thing in the world and doesn’t blink as he shows him the yellow. It is not a red. Let’s not overreact to the person who falls from the sky and finds himself in the middle of a soccer game. That only deserves a warning.
What makes the incident even better is that the skydiver took a first-person video of his descent into the park. It shows plenty of open green space around the soccer field, but if you didn’t think you could reach the meadow in the distance or just felt like visiting an amateur sporting event, you ended up right in the middle of the pitch. The video also features an outstanding reaction from one of the players in yellow, who doesn’t realize someone is coming from above until the last moment.
This is not the first time someone has fallen from the sky to disrupt a sporting event. (It has happened in England, Italy and, most famously, during a 1993 Evander Holyfield fight.) Despite the fact that it was in a game at the base of the pyramid of Polish football, the referee’s yellow card makes this incident one of the best of its kind.
