“Putin is using gas and oil as one more weapon in his war,” he warns, and points to the need to “prepare for any energy scenario”
The scenario is uncertain. The Government no longer dares to make long-term forecasts. Inflation is an example of it. What was contemplated a couple of months ago has been blown up. This uncertainty has led Pedro Sánchez to warn Spaniards of the need to be “prepared for any energy scenario”.
In the minds of European leaders, the coming winter dawns. Dependence on Russian gas is still great in many countries. Twelve states have suffered total or partial supply cuts by moscow. Spain has cultivated a diversity in terms of gas supply, strengthening in recent months the agreements and alliances with countries such as USA, Taste either Nigeriasome of the main suppliers along with Algeriaa country with which we went through a diplomatic crisis on account of the Spanish spin on the Western Sahara.
“Putin is using gas and oil as one more weapon in its war against Europe”, was the warning launched by Sánchez in an interview in La Sexta, in which he used terms such as “energy saving” and “energy efficiency”. “We must prepare for any of the scenarios, anticipate a future shortage of gas or oil. You have to take it very seriously,” he insisted.
Along these lines, just a few days ago, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenannounced that it will present an emergency plan in July in the face of Russian cuts in gas supply and in anticipation that there may be more.
The Third Vice President and Minister of Transition, Teresa Ribera, explained this Thursday in an appearance in Congress that the risk of a supply cut is behind the fact that 11 EU countries are at an “early alert level” and that Germany has activated, “for the first time in its history”, the state of alert prior to the emergency situation contemplated by the current EU supply security regulation, reports Europa Press.
“It explains why the three CEOs of the three main French energy companies have publicly asked all citizens to maximize efforts to save on their energy consumption”, the minister added.
In this context, he has pointed out that, “although Spain is better prepared”, it must not neglect its domestic responses and its European commitment.
Thus, it has opted to promote the diversification of gas suppliers, promote renewable energies and biogas, intensify saving and efficiency policies and also electrification. Measures all of them that he has considered that “they can be decisive for the next autumn or winter”.
