Pinoso asks to improve safety on CV-83 after a score of deaths in accidents in 30 years

Mayor Lázaro Azorín has already scheduled a meeting with the heads of the Department of Public Works and Mobility to address this issue. There are two proposals that the mayor will put on the table. One of them is the installation at the height of the Culebrón district of a DGT radar to discourage drivers from speeding. But, if this is not possible, it will request the construction of a roundabout in the longest straight section of the route between Monóvar and Pinoso. The second request is the installation of a roundabout -even if it is smaller- at the busy intersection of the districts of Las Encebras and Tres Fuentes, a few meters before the change of slope that gives access to the urban area.

The CV-83 is part of the Basic Network of Roads of the Valencian Community, runs from West to East through the centers of Pinoso, Monóvar and Elda, and connects, at the roundabout at kilometer point 0 + 000, with the branches of the South access to Elda from the A-31 highway, as well as with the urban road to this industrial town. This way, which registers an average daily intensity of 13,454 vehicles, of which 6.4% are heavy, is frequently used to travel to work centers, on medium-distance routes, between the towns of Monóvar, Elda and Petrer and the centers with the highest occupational density in the province, Alicante and Elche, located at a distance of 32 and 30 kilometers, respectively, through the A-31 and A-7 motorways.

It has been a long time but it is still remembered in Pinoso the long list of fatalities that CV-83 has claimed in recent decades. The most recent accident – before the one that occurred on October 1 with three deaths, two seriously injured and one minor – occurred just a year ago. A young 22-year-old pinosera lost her life after overturning the tourism in which she went from the district of Xinorlet to her work in a restaurant in the town. A second vehicle was involved in the accident, but both the driver and his passenger were unharmed. Twelve years ago, a married couple of elderly people also died at the Culebrón crossing after a collision that was circulating with his car in the direction of Pinoso. Fifteen years ago, at the height of the Hydroelectric station, three members of a family lost their lives and two were injured. And 27 years ago the same road was the scene, next to the new breakwater of Las Encebras, of the death of four masons who were heading from Benidorm to a construction site in Jumilla where they were working. These are some of the unfortunate accidents that occurred in the municipality of Pinoso. But on the CV-83 route that passes through Monóvar there have also been several accidents with fatalities, as in Elda. In the latter case, the most recent dates back to July 2020, when a 54 year old eldense he lost his life when the van he was driving collided head-on with a truck at kilometer 0.650 of the CV-83. In short, too many broken lives.
