Possible Baker Mayfield trade partner Carolina Panthers pass on QB

Two teams in need of a quarterback, the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, did not draft one in the first round of the NFL Draft and could remain suitors for Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The two franchises considered the most likely trade destinations for Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield did not address the position in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night.

In fact, quarterbacks seemed practically irrelevant in a draft during which six receivers were taken in the top 18. That hadn’t happened in the common draft era that began in 1967, according to ESPN.

The Carolina Panthers, picking No. 6, selected N.C. State offensive tackle Ickey Ekwonu. The Panthers do not have a pick in the second or third rounds.

The Seattle Seahawks, mentioned by Mayfield as a possible landing spot, selected Mississippi State offensive tackle Charles Cross at No. 9.

A quarterback wasn’t chosen until No. 20, when the Pittsburgh Steelers tabbed Pitt’s Kenny Pickett.
