Preakness Pole Positions – Full Draw & Odds for 2021 Triple Crown Race

The 2021 Preakness Stakes are caught between a rock and a hard place heading into the post draw on Tuesday.

Pimlico Racecourse, operator of the second Triple Crown jewel, must decide whether to allow Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit to race. This comes after Churchill Downs discovered Sunday that the horse tested positive for 21 picograms of betamethasone, 11 picograms higher than the legal limit for racing.

If Pimlico refuses to allow Medina Spirit to run, it could have serious betting implications not just on the Preakness Stakes, but the Triple Crown as well. Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun will be declared the winner at the Kentucky Derby if a second drug test validates the first, but will not race in the Preakness Stakes. That would mean no Triple Crown winner in 2021, even before the Preakness started.

Regardless of Pimlico’s decision, Sporting News will have the full results of Tuesday’s draw. Check out the full list of posting positions in the 2021 Preakness Stakes.

Positions after Preakness Stakes 2021

The 2021 Preakness Stakes pole position draw was originally scheduled for Monday, but was postponed until 4 p.m. ET Tuesday after it emerged that Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for 21 picograms of betamethasone. Horses are allowed up to 10 picograms of the anti-inflammatory drug in one race.

The test, if validated by a positive second, will invalidate Medina Spirit’s run in the Kentucky Derby. Ergo, the Preakness Stakes delayed the draw to decide if the horse would be allowed to run at Pimlico (his trainer, Bob Baffert, has insisted he will).

This section will be updated with the post position and official Pimlico racetrack odds.

What is the best position in horse racing?

The best stand positions vary, depending on factors such as the track and the total number of horses involved. The Preakness Stakes, for example, have been the most successful at No. 6, with 16 winners. Position No. 7 is a close second, with 14 winning horses produced. With that said, each of the pole positions numbered 1 through 8 has had double-digit winners since the introduction of the starting gate in 1909.
