The attorneys general from 23 states of United States, led by Minnesota, on Friday addressed a letter to the United States Attorney General, William Barr, criticizing his request to all his subordinates to investigate alleged irregularities in the past presidential elections and the branded “interference” in the electoral process.

“We recognize and appreciate the important role of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in some cases of electoral fraud prosecution. However, we are alarmed that it has reversed the long political history of the Department of Justice that has served to facilitate that function without allowing it to interfere with the electoral results or the appearance of a political participation in the elections is created “, assures the letter.

Prosecutors in nearly half of the country’s 50 states stress that the directive sent Monday by Barr “threatens to upset that key balance, with potentially corrosive effects on the electoral processes that are part of our democracy.”

In addition, they insist that in the last four decades the responsibility of supervising the electoral process has fallen on state and not federal prosecutors.

In a memo published Monday, Barr said: “I authorize to investigate substantial complaints of irregularities in voting or in the tabulation of the vote before the certification of the elections in their jurisdictions in certain cases, as I have already done in specific instances “.

“Such investigations and reviews can be conducted if there are clear and seemingly credible allegations of wrongdoing that, if true, could potentially affect the outcome of a federal election in a particular state,” he added.

With this order, Barr put federal prosecutors at the service of Trump’s strategy, who has not recognized his defeat in last week’s elections against the president-elect, Joe Biden, and denounces without evidence a large electoral fraud.

“If there has been fraud in the electoral process, the perpetrators must be brought to justice. We are committed to helping you achieve this. But, thus far, there have been no plausible allegations of widespread misconduct that could impact the outcome in any state or justify a change in DOJ policy, “say the 23 initiators.

For her part, the New York prosecutor, Letitia James, one of the signers of the complaint, stressed that “this policy change is nothing more than the last resort of an outgoing administration to desperately cling to power and spread chaos in our country. electoral process”.

“The people have spoken, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been elected president-elect and vice-president-elect from the United States. This election was fair and safe (…). The attempts of the President and Attorney General Barr to divide Americans and cast doubt on our elections is unpatriotic and will not go unanswered, “the New York Democratic prosecutor concluded.
