Protect data, 90% of EMEA companies suffer from problems

90% of EMEA companies have problems protecting data

Every day should be World Backup Day: Nearly 9 out of 10 organizations in the EMEA region are facing a growing chasm in data availability and protection.

This is demonstrated by the Veeam study, which says that 86% of organizations in the EMEA region have a protection gap between the amount of data they can afford to lose and the frequency with which they protect IT systems.

World Backup Day 2022 has been a reminder that, as the cyberthreat landscape and the complexity of the computing environment continue to increase, the need for robust protection measures is more vital than ever.

Ransomware is the new norm

There is still a perception that ransomware targets the unlucky few, but this is not the case. The majority (71%) of EMEA organizations have experienced ransomware attacks in the last 12 months. Given the unavoidable nature of cyberattacks like ransomware, it’s paramount that businesses can bounce back.

However, according to respondents, more than one in three (36%) organizations are unable to recover data after a ransomware attack. So now we are in the situation that it is not a matter of whether companies are experiencing ransomware incidents or not, but when. There are still too many organizations that cannot recover the data they lose.

Cybersecurity Best Practices

There are three elements that make up the ultimate strategy for protecting data from ransomware:

  • Use education to build a human firewall. Equip employees with the necessary digital hygiene tools and knowledge so they don’t fall for some of the oldest tricks of cybercrime, like phishing. You need to make sure this is an integral part of your business practices.
  • Implementation. Implement the 3-2-1-1-0 backup rule; invests in robust disaster recovery provisions in accordance with defined RPOs and RTOs; ensure data is protected across all platforms, including physical, virtual, cloud, SaaS, and Kubernetes.
  • Remediation. If education and implementation strategies fail, the ransom should not be paid. The only option is to restore the data.
