PSG vs. Real Madrid result, highlights as Kylian Mbappe seals dramatic PSG win


PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe turned in a match winning performance as his added time goal sealed a 1-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Mbappe was the star of the night for PSG, but despite the hosts dominating Carlo Ancelotti’s visitors, they needed a 93rd minute rescue act from their flying Frenchman.

The Les Bleus international gave Dani Carvajal a torrid evening throughout with Thibaut Courtois making a crucial early save to deny him.

Courtois looked to form an unbreakable barrier for Los Blancos in the second 45, as the Belgian stood up time and again, to keep out Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

Messi’s saved spot kick looked to have proved decisive on the hour mark, but Mbappe refused to let the headlines be about anyone else, as he eased onto Neymar’s back heel and slotted past Courtois in the dying seconds.

58th Min: Mbappe steps inside and hammers one straight at Courtois.

53rd Min: Another Mbappe burst in behind causes problems for Real Madrid but Courtois eventually gathers in. But, Los Blancos cheaply concede possession again and the Belgian stopper denies Messi.

51st Min: Eder Militao thunders into the back of Mbappe and collects a yellow card.

50th Min: BIG CHANCE FOR MBAPPE

Mbappe has been the star for PSG so far on the night in Paris and he conjures up the first chance of the second period. Some neat quick passes gives him a inch on the edge of the box but his bullet is palmed away by Courtois.

 

49th Min: The second half has started with the same pattern as the first 45 minutes with PSG controlling possession and Real Madrid looking to maintain a solid defensive shape.

46th Min: We are back underway in Paris! No changes from either side at the break as Messi kicks off the second half.

HALF-TIME: PSG have dominated in the French capital, but aside from Mbappe’s chance, Real Madrid have held firm.

 

45th Min: Real Madrid win their first corner of the night and Casemiro heads wide.

41st Min: VERRATTI BOOKED

The roles are reversed in the midfield battle ground as Verratti picks up a yellow card after catching Casemiro from behind.

37 Min: YELLOW FOR CASEMIRO

Casemiro is the first player to be cautioned in Paris as he catches with Leandro Parades and tangles with Marco Verratti. He will now miss the return leg in Madrid.

31st Min: Lionel Messi tricks past David Alaba on the edge of the Real Madrid box but he drags a weak effort wide of Courtois’ post.

30th Min: Small respite for Real Madrid with a free kick within crossing distance of the PSG goal but Toni Kroos’ set piece is easily cleared.

25th Min: PSG continuing to dominate possession here in Paris but no goals yet. Four corners to nil in favour of the hosts but just that Mbappe chance against Courtois to show for it so far.

16th Min: BIG SAVE

Lionel Messi’s through ball cuts through the Real Madrid defensive line and Mbappe edges in front of Carvajal (AGAIN) but Thibaut Courtios sticks out a boot to deny the flying Frenchman.

9th Min: Mbappe causing more problems against Carvajal as he wins a corner from the Spanish defender. But the eventual cross comes to nothing for PSG.

5th Min: First chance for PSG

Kylian Mbappe chops back inside and breezes past Dani Carvajal but his flashed cross is clipped over the bar by Angel Di Maria.

2:40pm: Champions League ‘contenders’ vs. Champions League ‘royalty’

PSG boss Pochettino has described his side as ‘contenders’ in the race for the Champions League in 2022 and labelled serial winners Real Madrid as being ‘in the habit’ of securing Europe’s biggest prize.

The Argentinian is likely to have been looking to ease some of the pressure on his all star squad but their respective records speak for themselves.

Real Madrid are the most successful club in European Cup/Champions League history with 13 titles compared to just one final appearance for PSG.

However, despite their historical dominance, Real Madrid have only made it past the last 16 stage once since winning it in 2018, with PSG reaching either the semi final or final in the last two seasons.

2:20pm: FORM GUIDES 

Real Madrid are leading the way in La Liga with a four point advantage over Sevilla but Ancelotti’s side have struggled for consistency in 2022.

Despite winning the 2021/22 Spanish Supercopa, Los Blancos suffered a quarter final exit in the Copa del Rey against Athletic Club, and Ancelotti’s side have won just two in five in the league since the turn of the year.

PSG have a mammoth 13-point lead at the top of Ligue 1, with Pochettino’s team looking nailed on to reclaim the French title in 2022.

However, they have also been knocked out of their domestic cup this month, but they have lost just once in Ligue 1 since the start of the campaign.

2:05pm: Neymar on the bench for PSG!

Brazilian superstar Neymar is only fit enough for a place on the bench for PSG with Mauricio Pochettino making four changes to his starting line up from their 1-0 win over Rennes last weekend.

Gianluigi Donnarumma replaces former Los Blancos stopper Keylor Navas in goal with Nuno Mendes preferred to Juan Bernat at left back.

Danilo comes in to bolster the midfield, in place of teenage star Xavi Simons, with veteran winger Angel Di Maria in for Julian Draxler.

1:30pm: Benzema starts! 

Los Blancos’ star man Karim Benzema returns to the starting line up in the big team news for Real Madrid in Paris.

The Frenchman was a major injury doubt for Carlo Ancelotti after missing their 0-0 La Liga draw with Villarreal last weekend and he replaces Gareth Bale in the starting XI.

Ferland Mendy comes in for Marcelo at left back with Luka Modric returning alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro in midfield as Fede Valverde drops to the bench.
