The fourth and penultimate day of the Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino presented a new change of pace that scrambled the provisional classification. If the previous two days tested the ability of the crews to manage harsh wind and wave conditions, the fourth session in Tuscany featured an unstable and unpredictable breeze from 8 to 16 knots that caused constant and dramatic changes of positions.

The first of the day started with 8-9 knots of wind. Alegre was in the lead on the left hand side of the start line, but it wasn’t long before Quantum Racing was at the front of the charge to take the lead at the first mark of the course. Behind the world champion, Alegre and Platoon. Sled, sixth, put his leadership in the standings at risk. As a déjà vu of what happened in the first test of the previous day, Quantum Racing saw how their rivals overtook them on the run while the wind rose to the 12-13 knot range. Platoon was the new leader and led the way, but the test was far from decided. The wind continued to rise, with 16 knots in the third section and instability that shook the positions. After succeeding in his bet on the right of the field, the Turkish Provezza (seventh in the first section and sixth in the second) sneaked into the last buoy to lead the final section, scoring his first partial victory in Tuscany . Platoon and Alegre would follow him at the finish line.

Fourth position for Sled and sixth for Quantum Racing allowed the leader to slip a further two points ahead of provisional Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino, who now led by six points. But there was still one test.

Quantum Racing’s first win since June

The wind settled in around 15 knots for the second of the day. A collision in the pre-exit between Interlodge and Gladiator caused the withdrawal of both (with damage that they will be able to repair for the last day). Quantum Racing took the coveted left at the start and led the first buoy ahead of Sled and Provezza. This time, the boat of owner and helmsman Doug DeVos was not going to be surprised, and he defended his position throughout the course to take his first victory since the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Cascais (June). Vayu signed a creditable second after coming back from the back of the pack due to an off-line at the start. Phoenix was third and Provezza fourth. The Turkish team returned to Marina di Scarlino with the best card of the day (1+4).

Quantum Racing Tactician Terry Hutchinson was relieved by this important result: “This victory has been a long time coming, yes. Yesterday we led the first moto and we didn’t turn at the right time, which cost us our position. In today’s first we were leading, we went to the right and the next time we got together we were sixth. It’s brutal. The whole crew is working hard, the boat is going well and most of the time we are doing things right, but when we make mistakes we pay dearly. It is a testament to the quality of the teams, everyone seizes opportunities and goes very fast. There’s no margin of error”.

All in two rounds

After completing four days and eight tests, the Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino will be decided tomorrow in two rounds. At the head of the provisional, Sled has a single point advantage over Quantum Racing, four over Phoenix and nine over Alegre. All of them have shown their best and worst face this week in Tuscan waters, where seven of the nine teams have already managed to score a partial victory. Literally anything can happen.

Don Cowie, Sled team manager, reflected at the end of the day on the race course: “The conditions here are very unusual and very irregular. Sometimes you have 12 knots at the top of the rig and only nine in the water. It is a complicated place… But very fun”.

In the general classification of the 52 Super Series 2022, Quantum Racing now leads Phoenix by one point after 36 partials and with a maximum of 12 races to go (two in Scarlino and up to ten in Barcelona).

The Royal Cup 52 Super Series Scarlino ends tomorrow, Saturday, October 1.
