Supposed volunteers of the Red Cross, with T-shirts of this organization, are visiting the towns of Extremadura asking for belongings and money to send them to Ukraine. It is a fraud. The NGO has denounced this behavior and has asked Extremadurans to only make donations through official channels to prevent being deceived.

The president of the Red Cross in Extremadura, Jesús Palo Tiburcio, raised the alarm this morning and announced that the NGO had already filed a complaint.

Palo Tiburcio has explained that they cannot channel more donations in kind because the border “cannot be a bazaar.” He has asked that donations be economic and follow official channels, for example transfer or bizum in their accounts. He has added that they fear that the conflict will drag on so they will need help for a long time.

The president of the Red Cross explained that they are facing the biggest humanitarian emergency in Europe since the Second World War and thanked the work of its volunteers and citizens. “We are in a very supportive region,” he indicated.

400 refugees have already passed through Extremadura fleeing the war in Ukraine

Precisely, yesterday the Extremadura Third Sector Platform recommended channeling aid to the people of Ukraine through donations of funds to specialized humanitarian organizations.

In a press release, he recalled that the Extremaduran humanitarian aid organizations that are currently working in Ukraine are the Spanish Red Cross, Ayuda en Acción, Cáritas, Coopera ONG, Educo, Farmamundi, Médicos del Mundo, Save the Children and Unicef.

In this way, said platform, in coordination with the Junta de Extremadura and the Extremadura Agency for International Cooperation of the Government of Spain, work to give a “diligent” response and facilitate solidarity to the people of Ukraine, in the face of the “unilateral invasion” of Russia to this Eastern European country, through “proper” management and channeling aid through donations of funds to specialized humanitarian organizations that are working in the territory.

In this sense, it emphasizes that the NGO and international organizations are launching appeals and requests for help, focused on guaranteeing the Ukrainian population’s access to basic services. These appeals are based on an analysis of needs and the estimation of a necessary budget for their coverage, designing a response that is adapted to the needs of the affected population.

The platform from Extremadura, at the same time, defends solidarity as the “most relevant” human and cohesion value of citizens, since, in the face of a humanitarian emergency of any kind, anywhere in the world, people, organizations and Institutions must “react by making available all the resources that we can contribute in each case”.

In this sense, it recommends this channeling of aid to the population so that the humanitarian response of the cooperation of the people of Extremadura can be “efficient, effective and within the framework of the principles of good humanitarian donation”.
