Remote work, a growing trend; remote vacancies grow

The labor market has been transformed over time, from the type of professions that are most in demand due to technological evolution to how they are practiced. In recent years, work done from home or any location chosen by the employee is gaining ground, especially in developed countries and in sectors linked to technology. According to the IT Labor Market Report 2022, remote work ranks second among the places with the most available job vacancies with 23.5% of the total. The first is Mexico City with 38.5 percent.

The pandemic proved that it is possible to move various jobs remotely. According to Statista, during the confinement in 2020 it was possible that 73% of the workforce in Mexico will work at home. One in five workers in the world has experienced this reality since the covid-19 closures were launched, estimates the International Labor Organization (ILO). In Latin America, at least 23 million people have worked remotely in the last year.

The adoption of teleworking in an increasingly digital environment is a reality, the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE, from Inegi), determines that the employment likely to be developed under the teleworking modality is 10.6%, economists from the Bank of Mexico indicates that these tasks can be carried out through information and communication technologies (ICT). In the world, 16% of companies are 100% remote, reports a study by Owl labs.

Telecommuting is an appreciated trend as a labor benefit. According to the 2022 IT Labor Market Report, 90.9% of IT professionals want more flexibility from their employers to work from home or in a hybrid model. “Companies that permanently adopt the remote work model will have an advantage in attracting and retaining talent, remote vacancies receive 50% more applicants. Today we have seen companies from all over the world hiring without borders, something that is a possibility thanks to the home office”, shares Emmanuel Olvera, CEO and co-founder of Hireline.

The practicality of remote work, thanks to different agile work techniques and methodologies, and even remote collaboration tools, make it possible to adopt hybrid or remote models. The technology industry is the one that has best adopted remote work, mainly due to frameworks such as Scrum that allow the performance of engineering teams to be measured.

In addition, “IT professionals know that the best international companies are already working remotely and aim their efforts to go beyond the limits of Latin America, for this reason Latin American companies must begin to adopt practices and benefits so as not to let go of top talent,” says Olvera.

In any professional environment, self-discipline and responsibility are important, basic elements for flexible work models to work optimally. On the part of companies, organization and technology are the basis of a correct home office. Work aims to be the activity that employees develop, not the place where they go.
