Fernandes talks up unity in Man Utd squad

Rio Ferdinand has identified five major problems at Manchester United as he singled out Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

There have been issues for Ralf Rangnick’s men off and on the pitch this season as they are set to come up well short of their goal of winning the Premier League at the start of the year.

United are still in the Champions League, however, as they face off against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie, but it’s a tall order for them to go all the way in the competition.

Ferdinand has not held back when assessing his former team’s state of play over the course of the campaign.

And the pundit is continuing to kick them while they’re down as he reckons there are at least five significant problems at Old Trafford.

Is Manchester United’s recruitment policy to blame? Comment below

On United’s chances of winning the Champions League, he told BT Sport: “I don’t they will. I think they’re nowhere near it in the league.

“Yes, it’s a knockout competition, it’s a bit different, but I see three, four, maybe five teams that I would say are ahead of Manchester United to win this at least.”

“You need a level of consistency as well to be able to perform, perform home and away, and you’ve got to get the job done. At times, there have been occasion where you’ve thought you can see something and then all of a sudden they take two steps back.”

“You need eleven stroke thirteen, fourteen players every game to go out and perform and Manchester United have been guilty of not being able to do that enough.”

Ferdinand singled out Ronaldo and Cavani and their advancing age as he pointed to the club’s poor recruitment.

He added: “When you bring a manager in, he might get this group of players playing really well and all of a sudden it does come a lot easier. But, I still think there’s recruitment (issue).

“You think of the two centre-forwards, Cavani and Cristiano, 37 and 34. That’s not Man United centre-forwards is it? Really?”

Ferdinand reckons United will have trouble attracting the big stars to Old Trafford, something that has never been an issue over the past 20 years.

He said: “How do you sell the dream to players then? That’s the big thing. You’re talking about recruitment of players, say you’re going to get one of the top young talents in the world, how do you sell the club to him?

“There needs to be a direction, an understanding of where he’s going. You want to win. Man United aren’t afforded that, they can’t say that.”
