The Russian navy is following the movements of the Spanish maritime action ship ‘Rayo’, which is based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, after it entered the Black Sea this Wednesday to participate in NATO exercises, as reported by the Russian Defense Ministry.

“The forces of the Black Sea Fleet proceeded to control the movements of the patrol vesselo Ray of the Spanish Armada, that on July 7, 2021 it entered the waters of the Black Sea “, the Russian Ministry has indicated in a statement collected by the Sputnik news agency.

The ‘Rayo’ departed on June 25 from the port of Cartagena as command ship of the Permanent Group of Measures Against Mines number 2 of NATO (SNMCMG-2), as explained by the Spanish Ministry of Defense on its website.

This permanent group is carrying out between June 28 and July 10 the financial year ‘Sea Breeze 2021’, organized on this occasion by the Ukrainian Navy and the US Sixth Fleet, as reported by NATO at the time.

The exercise seeks to “strengthen defense and deterrence” by conducting maritime patrols and joint maneuvers with an eye toward strengthening preparedness, improving collaboration and interoperability in the Black Sea region, the Alliance explained in a recent statement.

This edition will feature a record participation from more than 30 countries, between NATO members and allies, with 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft and 18 special operations teams and submariners.

In early June, the spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashénkov, warned that in the framework of these exercises, the Atlantic Alliance supplies modern weapons to Ukraine, which will then be transferred to the national troops and battalions fighting the separatists in the Donbas region, in the east, Sputnik recalls.

For its part, the Atlantic Alliance defends that “its vessels operate routinely in the Black Sea, in accordance with International Law, normally patrolling the waters for two-thirds of the year “and that this type of maneuver, in addition to improving interoperability, seeks” to demonstrate the presence and guarantee the allies the maritime commitment to collective defense. ”

Incident with a British ship

The surveillance of the Spanish ship occurs after the incident recorded two weeks ago with a ship from the British navy. On June 23, the British destroyer ‘HMS Defender’ entered three kilometers into the territorial waters Russia despite warnings from the Coast Guard, according to the Moscow version. A Su-24 fighter jet dropped four bombs and fired warning shots.

The British Ministry of Defense He denied that any warning shot was fired in the Black Sea and clarified that the ship was sailing in Ukrainian waters, before describing the operation as a “routine passage through an internationally recognized corridor.” A video and the testimony of a British correspondent who was traveling on the ship corroborate that there were shots.

After that, the Russian authorities summoned the United Kingdom’s military attaché in Moscow and asked the British Government to open a “thorough” investigation into what happened to “avoid such incidents in the future.
