Schelling Becomes Lehigh’s Third Straight Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Tommy Schelling of the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team was recognized late last week as a Senior CLASS Award first team All-American. It marks the third straight season the Mountain Hawks have placed a member on the first team, joining Virginia as the only two programs in the nation who can say that. Leggett was also a finalist and first team All-American last season, while Craig Chick was in 2019 (there were no finalists announced in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Virginia’s Matt Moore was named the winner of the 2022 Senior CLASS Award.

Lehigh has featured five all-time finalists, with all five being named first team All-Americans (meaning they finished top five out of the 10 finalists in the overall voting). Along with Schelling, Leggett and Chick were Ty Souders in 2014 and Jonathan Stumpf in 2011. Schelling was the only Patriot League student-athlete named a first team All-American by the Senior CLASS Award (Loyola’s Aidan Olmstead was named to the second team) .

Cole Kirst and james spence were also named candidates in 2022. Lehigh’s three Senior CLASS Award candidates led the nation. The Mountain Hawks are the only program in the nation with multiple candidates in four straight seasons.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as NCAA Division I seniors or graduate students and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The award, chosen by a vote of Division I men’s lacrosse coaches, national lacrosse media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior or graduate-level student-athlete in Division I men’s lacrosse.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character, and competition.

Schelling has been a standout in all areas during his Lehigh career. In 2022, he was named a second team All-Patriot League honoree, leading the Mountain Hawks in assists (41) and points (68). His 2.73 assists per game were good for sixth nationally while his 4.53 points per contest were 16th. Schelling recorded multiple points in all but one game this season, including 5+ points in eight straight contests.

Schelling was also named an Academic All-Patriot League honoree for the second straight season, owning a GPA over 3.5 as a Mechanical Engineering major.
