Several countries ask for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council due to the violence in Jerusalem


Several countries, including two permanent members of the UN Security Council (France and China), have requested a urgent body meeting to deal with the situation in Jerusalem, after last weekend the clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian civilians have left more than 150 wounded, almost all of them Palestinians.

As announced by the Norwegian mission to the UN on its social networks, the petition has been formulated jointly by Norway, United Arab Emirates, France, Ireland and China, who have asked for closed-door consultations to be held tomorrow.

The session is taken for granted since it is called by two permanent members, France and China.

The wave of violence began on March 22: Since then, 39 people have been killed in a series of attacks, violent raids and clashes between Palestinians and Israelis, which began when four Israeli civilians were killed in a stabbing attack and car accident in the southern city of Beer Sheva. As Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, reported at a press conference, the highest representative of the United Nations also stressed that “any provocation must be avoided at all costs.”

The Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Benet, He said yesterday, Sunday, that the security forces have “carte blanche” from the government to take the pertinent measures that “guarantee the security of the citizens of Israel.”

The current outbreak of violence, which coincides with the Christian Holy Week, Passover and Muslim Ramadan festivities, has already caused the blockade of the only Palestinian (Islamist) party in the governing coalition in Israel, and has become one of the most serious in recent years.
