Shrove Tuesday will be a holiday next year in Extremadura. The regional government has changed its initial proposal, which included March 20 as a non-working day on the occasion of Saint Joseph’s Day, and finally opted for February 21.

The Ministry of Education and Employment prepares a decree that sets the calendar of holidays for next year. The rule had already passed the prior consultation and hearing and public information procedures. In both cases, the initial proposal stated that the non-working day of January 1, Sunday, would be moved to Monday the 2nd, as allowed by national legislation. And this last date, in turn, moved to March 19, Saint Joseph’s Day. But since it will also be Sunday, it was finally postponed to Monday, March 20.

However, the Ministry has reopened the hearing process to introduce a modification and designate February 21 as a holiday instead of March 20. When the period for public exposure is over, the decree may be definitively approved by the Governing Council.

In the report that accompanies the draft decree, it is indicated that Carnival Tuesday has been chosen because it is “a popular festival widely spread and celebrated in Extremadura.” Specifically, it cites three important cities in Extremadura (Badajoz, Mérida and Navalmoral de la Mata) and emphasizes that this year municipalities in the province of Badajoz (Hornachos, Valverde de Mérida, Villar del Rey…) have designated this day as a holiday. .) and Cáceres (Jaraíz de la Vera, Malpartida de Cáceres, Villanueva de la Vera…).

With this decision, the Board defines the holidays for the next financial year. The Workers’ Statute recognizes fourteen labor holidays a year, of which two are of a local nature chosen by the town councils. Nationally, they are January 1, May 1, October 12 and December 25. These are added by royal decree on Good Friday, August 15, November 1, December 6 and December 8. And they are optional on January 6, Holy Thursday and March 19 or July 25.

The Government can transfer national holidays that are on Sunday to Mondays. And the autonomous communities can choose other days because they are traditional festivals, replacing the national ones that are optional or those that go on Monday.

With these conditions, the Board plans to set as holidays in 2023 the days January 1, January 6, April 6, April 7, May 1, August 15, September 8, October 12, November 1, December 6, December 8 and December 25. Since January 1 is a Sunday, instead of moving it to Monday, January 2, the Board opts for February 21, Carnival Tuesday.
