The director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simon, has stated that sees “very likely” that Spain will not have major epidemic waves again and he added that “there may be the sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth wave, but they will not be like the previous ones.”

Simón has made these statements to the media before participating in a presentation on covid at the congress of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE), held at the University of León, where it has recognized that upon arrival has felt like “a rock star”, by the stir created.

And on this expectation, he has admitted that “at this specific moment” he likes it, because it is given in the framework of a congress that has been possible in person despite its high attendance (more than 650 scientists).

Asked about the end of the pandemic, Simón has insisted that until everyone is vaccinated the coronavirus is not going to end, But, he clarified, pandemics do not depend only on Spain: “Spain is important, but it is not the navel of the world. “

However, Simón has stressed that does not see likely that there will be large epidemic waves in Spain: “There may be some ripple in some specific groups, but the situation in Spain, right now, is very favorable, and this makes it possible, little by little, to normalize the situation.”

National public health agency

Asked about creating a national public health agency And if it is in his objectives to direct it, Simón has admitted that the Government is already working to develop the national law of Public Health and create that center, but his direction, he has said, will be chosen from among the candidates that are presented or proposed.

“Whoever thinks I’m going to be a director just because …: first, I would have to run for office”, something he doesn’t know if he will do it, “depends on many factors.” “But that nobody thinks that I am predestined for that position”, has wanted to make clear.

Regarding his absence from public events and press conferences since mid-July, the head of the CCAES explained that he no longer appears to report on the covid because “The situation has to be normalized, and the evolution of the epidemic is good enough, so less media presence is needed.”

Simon has acknowledged that thanks “being out of the spotlight“and” hopefully people will gradually forget about people and focus on health issues. ”

Regarding a third booster dose, Simón has pointed out that the booster is done when there are doubts about the immunity generated by the vaccines or the disease is long-lasting and, so far, “the evidence indicates that it could be, but there is not very solid evidence ; therefore, it is normal that the matter is under discussion. ”

On the vaccination of children under 12 years of age, Simón has pointed out that Spain depends on clinical trials and authorizations from regulatory agencies. However, he added that “he hopes it can be done soon.”
