QUINCY — For the second week in a row, the number of new COVID-19 cases has dropped across the region as the wave of infections caused by the omicron variant recedes, according to the latest statistics released Thursday by the California Department of Public Health. Massachusetts.
The state is closing in on 1.5 million cases since the coronavirus pandemic began in Massachusetts two years ago.
The number of new cases for the two weeks ending Jan. 29 in South Shore is 7,300, a 45 percent decrease from 13,313 in the previous two-week period. Since January 15, the number of new cases in the region has dropped by nearly two-thirds.
Cases were down in all 23 communities in the South Shore survey. Quincy reported 163 new cases on January 20. The city had 25 new cases on Thursday.

In Braintree, there were 12 new cases on Thursday, compared to 60 on January 20.
The drops are even more pronounced when compared to the holiday period.
Hospitalization numbers statewide are down by about a third from the previous week.
The state reported 4,829 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 1,498,053 cases.
Case numbers only count laboratory-confirmed tests, not positive results from home tests.
The number of people statewide hospitalized with COVID-19 on Thursday was 1,661, up from 2,521 the previous week. There are 273 people in intensive care units, up from 396 the previous week. There are 161 intubated patients, compared to 237 a week ago.
The state health department reported 59 COVID-19 deaths Thursday, for a total of 21,692 since the start of the pandemic.
