The Portuguese waters of Vilamoura will be the center of international sailing this week with the celebration of two important events: the 470 World Championship and the RS: X European Championship, in which the crews of the Spanish Olympic sailing team, ESP Sailing Team, and the pre-Olympic team, will fight for the podium.
For the crews of the Spanish Olympic team, this is undoubtedly one of the most important events of the Olympic cycle, one of the last scheduled to measure forces with those who will be their opponents in the waters of Enoshima at the Summer Games.
The 470 World Championship will premiere tomorrow’s intense program of the week, with regattas that will last until Saturday the 13th with the contest of the Medal Races. Jordi Xammar and Nicolás Rodríguez in the men’s division and Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero in the women’s will sail in the Olympic disciplines of Tokyo 2020, also joining the mixed category that will make its debut in Paris 2024. Among these young crews that are already beginning their Olympic preparation are the Canaries Patricia Reino and Pablo García, the Catalans Nacho Dávila and María González and the Balearic María Bover and Fernando Rodríguez.
In the absence of the Australians Belcher and Ryan, current world champions, our world runners-up Xammar and Rodríguez will face off with crews of the stature of the Swedes Dahlberg and Bergstrom, third on the last world podium and European champions, or the French Peponnet and Mian, third in the European. The Spaniards arrive with the endorsement of a second place in the World Ranking and the title of champions of the last international competition played, the World Cup Series in Miami 2020.
With regard to the female contingent, with the exception of the Japanese (6th) and Chinese (10th) crews, the Top 10 of the World Ranking is in full, led by the French Lecointre and Retornaz, the Spanish Mas and Cantero and the British Mills and McIntre, the latter defending the world title. The Polish Skrzpulec / Ogar and the Brazilian Oliveira / Barbachan close a Top5 that promises to give a lot of war and excitement for the next six days.
On Tuesday 9 the tables will enter the scene, with a list of entries still quite open as they have until tomorrow Monday to formalize their entries in the RS: X European Championship.
The Spanish delegation is led by Blanca Manchón, seventh in the continental event last year, who will have as companions on the starting line the entire Top5 of the 2020 European Championship, formed by the French Charline Picon, the Israeli Katy Spychakov, the Polish Zofia Noceti, the British Emma Wilson and the Italian Georgia Speciale.
The men’s pre-Olympic team, still pending to know who will occupy the Spanish Olympic place in Tokyo 2020, is in full attendance with six sailors: the Andalusian Juan Manuel Moreno, the Alicante-born Iván Pastor, the Balearic Joan Carles Cardona and Sergi Escandell, the Canarian Ángel Granda and the Galician Tomás Vieito. The list of rivals is headed by the defenders of the continental podium: the Israelis Cohen and Zubari, and the Dutch Badloe who also holds the world title.
It will undoubtedly be a special European for the Spaniards who will have to prepare as hosts of the 2021 RS: X World Championship, which has announced its celebration in the waters of the Bay of Cádiz from April 21 to 27, after the cancellation of the Olympic Week French to be held in Hyères and whose program included the World Cup.
