Expenditure on childbirth and child care benefits in the first three months of the year was 15.3 million euros in Extremadura, a figure that is 51.5 percent higher than that of the same period in 2021, when stood at 10.15 million.

In total, Social Security processed 2,755 childbirth and care benefits during the first quarter of 2022, of which 1,330 corresponded to the first parent, usually the mother, and 1,425, to the second parent, usually the father.

In addition, the number of casualties due to birth and care of minors grew by 20.2% compared to the same period of time in 2021, when 2,291 were processed, reports the Government Delegation in a press release.

It should be remembered that the childbirth and care benefit replaced the old maternity and paternity benefits. One year has passed since the complete equalization of both. Currently, the leave is 16 weeks for both parents and is recognized as an individual and non-transferable right.

Of the 16 weeks, six of them must be enjoyed immediately after childbirth or a judicial or administrative resolution in cases of adoption, guardianship or foster care. The rest of the time can be arranged in successive periods.

The amount of these benefits is equivalent to the contribution base for the month prior to the birth, adoption, guardianship or foster care, and is paid directly by the National Social Security Institute (INSS) during the weeks that the permit lasts.

The National Institute of Social Security offers the possibility of requesting the birth benefit electronically, through the Tu Seguridad Social portal.

Successive rest periods for childbirth or care of the minor can also be requested electronically, if the parents choose to divide the period.

The first three years of leave to care for a foster child or minor are considered the effective contribution period for the purposes of Social Security benefits for retirement, permanent disability, death and survival, maternity and paternity. For the purposes of these benefits, the first year of leave to care for other family members is also considered effectively quoted.
