‘Strange World’ reveals its first sequences: this is how this Disney tribute to classic science fiction works

Any fan of traditional science fiction can be captivated by the first teasers, still very brief, that Disney is showing off its next animated film, ‘Strange World,’ which will premiere on November 25 in theaters. At the moment, we have seen something else in a pass in the company of veteran producer Roy Conli, and the truth is that suspicions are confirmed.

‘Strange World’ is a moving tribute to the traditional science fiction and fantasy adventures that have populated the genre since the days of Jules Verne. In fact, the expedition of seasoned travelers that stars in the film makes a kind of “journey to the center of the Earth”, although not exactly: its starting point is already a unique fantasy world.

Our protagonist is Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal), who after finding the mythical hidden land of Avalonia, has settled there and has lived growing a vegetable discovered by himself in the company of his wife and son. But when the plant ceases to be a useful source of energy, it must travel to the interior of the Earth to solve the mysterywith the help of his family, his father, another adventurer he meets again (Dennis Quaid) and the brave woman who rules Avalonia (Lucy Liu).

We were able to enjoy this entire initial stretch of the adventure, in a series of clips introducing the characters and first steps in this ‘Strange World’, with the collaboration of Roy Conli. The film’s producer is a Disney veteran with nearly three decades of in-house experience.and has gone through films like ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, ‘Treasure Planet’, ‘Tangled’ or ‘Big Hero 6’, among others.

family and adventure

He was the one who brought us the two great themes of ‘A strange world’. On the one hand, family and parenthood. In the purest style of traditional Disney, the film presents three generations of adventurers (the grandfather, the father, the son) who have to solve their misunderstandings with a common goal. And along the way, discover that united they are invincible.

More interesting seems to us what is possibly the greatest attraction of the film: the homage to the classics of the trotting, imaginative and carefree adventure of science fiction. Conli mentioned Verne and Wells, but there is also an unmistakable flavor of a pulp story of explorers and unknown planets. The producer put ER Burroughs on the table, and we are pleased to know that the unfair failure of the stupendous ‘John Carter’ has not aroused any phobia towards the author in the production company.

That aroma of classic adventure is present from the very typography of the film’s title, which is unmistakably reminiscent of magazine covers. pulp where the adventures in other worlds took place, of gigantic scale and monumental dangers and that authors like Burroughs cultivated. The film is infected with that sense of wonder and conveys it very well in some sequences that we saw, such as the first arrival of the explorers in this new world, all absolutely alien fauna and flora, colors fallen from space and wonder everywhere.

Disney + does not work out the accounts: it gains more subscribers than expected but loses more and more money

In fact, the presentation of some animals and plants that may be the first contacts of explorers with this world and that favors a superb action sequence allows us to enter this absolutely alien environment and that will attract fans for its description of places from another galaxy. The creatures that live in this world are of a particularly lucky design, featuring (apart from the inevitable cute creature that will accompany the heroes) some menacing, tentacle-spitting organisms to which HP Lovecraft would have said “yes, sir.”

A more elastic character animation and cartoon than usual in computer movies gives an “analog” touch to ‘Strange World’. And that also fits perfectly with the tribute to classic adventures: the icing on the cake for a film that promises to return us to a Disney that channels a certain pulp philosophy that is missed in animation mainstream current. It is ironic that this hymn to the tradition of the genre comes precisely from the hands of Disney.
