Sweden overtakes Greece and overtakes Spain on the way to the World Cup

  • The Nordic team knocks the Helleno (2-0) and is positioned as the new leader of the group with two points of advantage over the Red

  • The Spain-Sweden on November 14 at La Cartuja is shaping up to be the decisive duel to get the direct ticket to the tournament

Two sparks hit Sweden the triumph against Greece, much higher in the first half, and the leadership of group B, which now leads Spain by two points in the absence of so many days and visiting La Cartuja.

Sweden, who held the 0-0 draw miraculously before the break, was lethal in the second part, with two goals in ten minutes: a penalty of Forsberg and a great action of Isaac. Before, Greece had crashed two balls on the sticks, like the Nordics a month ago in Athens, where they fell 2-1.

Greek rockiness

Eight consecutive home wins in World Cup qualifying matches had been signed by Sweden as of Tuesday, while Greece had only lost one of the last 12 such away games.

Despite playing at the Friends Arena, Sweden was choked by Greece from the start: an orderly, fierce team, well trained by John Van’t Schip, who did not concede a single chance in the first half and had to go to rest ahead on the scoreboard.

The Dutch coach maintained the defense of five despite the loss of Tzavellas, placing Tsimikas as third center and Giannoulis as lane. He gave up a priori one of his best weapons in attack and that had created many problems for Sweden in Athens.

But it came out of Wonderful. Through that band came almost all the Greek danger in the first half, with the falls of Masouras, a headache for the Swedish defense, especially for Krafth.

Masouras warned two minutes later, scored offside shortly after and crashed a heads-up against Olsen against him stick at 21. Before the break he had time to take another shot and hang a cross that Pavlidis headed to crossbar.

Isaac, decisive

Sweden did not improve much with the break, although at least it cut the waterway of the Greek counterattacks. Quaison, who replaced the sanctioned Kulusevski, took a whiplash that Vlachodimos cleared. It was the first local occasion, in the 56th minute.

But Mavropanos, impeccable until then, made a rude penalty knocking down Isak, that he had won the race chasing a long ball from LindelΓΆf. Forsberg did not forgive.

Greece continued to attack a Sweden in the back, although without danger. And “Janne” Andersson’s team scored again in a play as simple as it was effective: a long serve from Olsen that ate the Greek rear and in which Isak shone again, who came from scoring a goal against Kosovo.
