The car manufacturer Tecnovelero and the Madrid company specializing in hydrogen-related technologies, Arcamo Controls S.A., have presented a joint project for the development of Virante, Tecnovelero’s first electric car powered by hydrogen. On the occasion of the European Mobility Week (SEM), which is held from September 16 to 22, we tell you all the details of this new project that aims to bring sustainable and clean mobility to all communities in the Spanish state.

Both Tecnovelero and Arcamo Controls SA want hydrogen to be an energy vector that, added to electricity, facilitates sustainable mobility without repercussions on the environment. “Align all the projects developed from the territory towards a 100% sustainable orientation and capable of covering, already currently, the needs of a country where green energy will be key”, explain the top managers of Tecnovelero and Arcamo Controls SA, Javier Lavernia and Gerard Aragonés, respectively.

The Virante project has several collaborations with public research organizations (OPI), such as the National Hydrogen Center (Puertollano), an organization promoted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. This center is fully dedicated to the development of hydrogen-related technologies, so it will collaborate in the project by providing support, a qualified technical and research team, laboratories and an experimentation center.

Other organisms like Eurecat, the Technological Center of Catalonia, will also have a prominent participation, providing knowledge in the automotive sector. The CSIC Liftec, the Laboratory for Research in Fluid Dynamics and Combustion Technologies, will also participate as a specialist in fluid mechanics, such as hydrogen. Later, in a final phase of the project, it will also collaborate Applus Idiada, for the homologation of the resulting vehicles.

The new Tecnovelero Virante

The new Virante can be configured with powers that go from 4 to 25 kilowatts thanks to the technological developments that have been carried out to create the hydrogen-powered fuel cell that will drive the different electric motors of the vehicle. There will also be a high capacity version with a 40 kilowatt motor designed to carry out heavy tasks or for rural areas. This version will feature a high cargo volume of up to 1,000 liters capacity and equip rims and tires all track, in addition to different technical solutions to use the vehicle in the workplace. It should be noted that the new technology would allow the hydrogen tank to be filled in a few minutes through a supply network.

In order to bring sustainable and clean mobility to all the Autonomous Communities of Spain, initially collaboration will be sought with the administrations and other entities for the creation of hydrogen production stations (hydrogen) and hydrogen fueling stations (hydrolineras) in the rural area of different regions of the province of Tarragona.

Finally, it should be noted that some companies and administrations in the territory have already shown interest in the new Virante in order to study its integration into some of their fleets. “There are agreements and approaches that we carry out with discretion and that, if they bear fruit, will be a great step towards sustainable mobility in Spain”, affirm the CEOs of both companies.
