The Plasencia food market will host the first edition of the Senior Fair on the 22nd, which completes what in previous years was known as Elder’s Day. The novelty aims to bring together some thirty service companies for the elderly, as detailed on Tuesday by the Councilor for the Elderly, Equality, Childhood, Family, Mobility, Citizen Services and General Administration, who anticipated that 22 businesses have already committed their presence.

“We have long wanted to prepare a fair of this type, to give a new dimension to what had been Elder’s Day,” explained Mayte Díaz, who announced that there will be 35 stands and that 22 companies have already committed their presence ( In this type of event, it is common for some exhibitors to contract more than one stand, in order to have a larger space in which to display their products or services). The mayor also announced that the tourist train will work on the same day, the 22nd, understanding that “it is an intergenerational activity, which favors the joint participation of adults and children, the two groups that most appreciate any activity that we organize with them in mind.”

Díaz also explained that the programming of the I Senior Fair will include some previous activities. Thus, the Alkázar Theater will host on the 19th the performance of different folk groups, as well as a play and a sample of dance therapy by nursing homes.

Brief informative talks

Two days later, at the Las Claras cultural center there will be several short talks, lasting about 45 minutes, “in the form of informative pills on issues of special interest to this segment of the Plasencia population,” the councilor advanced.

The first of these brief conferences will address issues related to healthy nutrition starting at 10 am. The following ones, which will start at 11 and 12 hours respectively, will deal with preventive behaviors for the elderly and reverse mortgages, which are the type of loan that allows the elderly to sell their house but continue to live in it. In the afternoon, at 6:00 p.m., there will be another of these “pills”, in this case about accessibility.

The event will include other activities the day before, such as talks at the Las Claras cultural complex or performances at the Alkázar Theater

Also on the 21st, the Town Hall plenary hall will host the presentation of the Grandfather Mayorga awards, which recognize the careers of city residents who stand out for their contribution to the well-being of society in general and of the elderly in particular. Maye Díaz recalled that the presentation of candidacies is still open. They can be formalized in the municipal registry until the next day 11, and the bases are available on the municipal website.

On the other hand, the mayor commented that the Consistory continues to advance in the preparation of its first Plan for the Elderly, which will include measures aimed at improving the quality of life of this sector of the local population. This document is also a preliminary step for the city to present its candidacy to join the Network of cities and communities friendly to the elderly.
