The 9 utensils that you should never wash in the dishwasher

Not everything can be happily thrown in the dishwasher because the heat and moisture from this appliance can break or damage your cookware. Today we show you what you can introduce and what not without fear of running out of your precious knives.

We’ve all bought loads of items that the manufacturer claims are dishwasher safe. However, what does it take to make something safe to go in the dishwasher, and why can’t other items go there at all?

We are all used to putting almost everything through the dishwasher, and that’s because most products, especially cookware, have that coveted dishwasher-safe label. But how do you get that label?

The term dishwasher-safe essentially describes any item that can withstand moisture, high temperatures, and strong detergents during the wash cycle (here are natural options for detergent use).

The materials that oxidize, melt or deform in boiling water cannot fit into this handy appliance. If you have an instruction manual for a product, it should say somewhere whether the item is dishwasher safe or not.

If you don’t have it nearby, don’t worry, we’re here to tell you what you can and can’t put in the dishwasher. Let’s go there:

Knives: Many don’t know it, but they can damage the racks in your dishwasher. Also, the blades dull a lot quicker, so wash them by hand.

Wooden or bamboo cutting boards: Moisture and constant exposure to water crack them, so always wash them by hand and avoid soaking them.

Aluminum: You can reuse those disposable turkey pans and baking pans, but dishwashing detergent will discolor them.

Insulated mugs: The dishwasher will damage the seal and insulation.

Copper: Avoid discoloring that expensive cookware and wash it by hand.

Delicate glass: Sturdy glass is fine, but anything fine or delicate is best washed by hand to prevent breakage. And trying to clean broken glass in the dishwasher is a nightmare.

thin plastic: Anything flimsy, like tubs of butter spread, will likely melt in the dishwasher on high heat, even if you put it on the top rack. Always wash these types of objects by hand.

sentimental items: Heirlooms are irreplaceable, so the last thing you want to do is break or discolor one by running it through the dishwasher. Gently hand-washing these types of objects is always the safest option.

Molten iron: Although many brands market their enameled cast iron cookware as dishwasher safe, it’s still best to wash these pieces by hand to prevent chipping and rust. Unenameled cast iron should never be put in the dishwasher.
