The best video games of 2022 so far and the most anticipated ones to come

Indies, Triple A, retro mechanics or innovation galore. A year goes a long way, and we summarize it in this selection of the best that has been seen so far in terms of video games and the best that is yet to come. For all platforms, of all styles, a whole year of intensive gaming in our catalog of essential titles seen or to be seen in 2022.

The best video games of 2022 so far

‘Card Shark’

One of the undisputed indie games of the year is this amazing mix of puzzles, skill games, mini-games, and a deliciously historical setting, which puts us in the shoes of an apprentice gambler who reaches Versailles itself, plucking bums. Authentic in-game cheating is the key to this historical walk through the evils of gambling, in a game full of humor and amazing real data, and with graphics that are as unique as they are appropriate.

  • For Nintendo Switch and PC

‘Elden Ring’

Without a doubt, the game that has made the most rivers of ink run this year. FromSoftware’s formula of visual darkness and difficulty from hell doesn’t seem to be exhausted, and this time the addition of the story devised by George RR Martin seems to have given it a special patina. The open world structure works better than ever in a title that confirms the upward trajectory of a studio that we have yet to see the first stumble.

  • For PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.

‘Evil Dead: The Game’

We did not put too much hand in the fire for this new adventure of Ash Williams against the dead in classic environments of the franchise. But the truth is that the result, despite the fact that neither technically nor in the mechanics does it offer surprises beyond what is usual in asymmetric horror multis, it is quite a festival for fans of the television series and the trilogy of films. Lots of tributes, perfectly recreated environments and short, immediate and resounding fun.

  • For PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

I have never liked the 'Souls' but I did like the From Software universes. 'Elden Ring' is just what I needed

‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’

Although sometimes his own size and ambition overwhelm him and dampen his findings, the truth is that the combination of exploration mechanics, ghost hunting action, lore yōkai and cyber madness works quite well. It is not a horror game despite the flashes to scare the respectable, and the Tokyo replica squeezes the visual muscle of PS5. A game without too many surprises, but that in its best moments manages to get rid of the generic gags of open worlds.

‘Horizon Forbidden West’

An exhibition of technological muscle of the latest Sony console that, although it does not leave the narrow channels of the open world adventure, is varied enough and technically hard enough to stand out without difficulty in a year in which we did not we have run into too many excesses from the point of view of pushing the hardware to its limits. The game has become one of the indisputable claims of PS5, and its peculiar color and sense of adventure are undoubtedly an emblem for Sony.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’

If every year we don’t get at least one absolutely round classic 2D beat’em-up, we’re not happy. This time it has been the turn of the Ninja Turtles in a superb and accessible action game that drinks from the classics of the genre but multiplies its options. Stunning pixelated graphics, supernatural fluidity, and characters brimming with charisma for a retro game that’s up to the task.

  • For PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

‘stray’

The surprise hit of the summer was this short-lived indie wonder that got a well-deserved extra boost when Playstation decided to include it in their games for the higher levels of their revamped Playstation Plus. Exploration, stealth and easy puzzles in an adorable game that perfectly replicates the movements, behavior and style of our feline friends. With robots included.

The best video games of 2022 that are yet to come

‘Saint Row’

Volition wipes the slate clean with its franchise, which ended up becoming the most delusional and thug sandbox imaginable a few years ago. Although it has not lost that unpredictable touch and where anything goes, the clear intention of the studio with this reboot is to return the saga to a point more akin to its beginnings as a criminal management simulator, that is, closer to ‘GTA’ than it originally inspired. In its favor, there is still a long way to go before we can compare it with a genuine ‘GTA’ and the effort that has been made in the customization section.

  • August 23 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

‘The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’

‘The Lord of the Rings’ is back in fashion, between the new Amazon series and this renewed vision of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, whose aesthetics and stories return in a game that will focus on the misadventures of the most charismatic character of the entire franchise, the ineffable Gollum. A title that will combine action and adventure and that will allow us to delve into the tortured psyche of the unforgettable monstrosity.

  • September 1 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Switch.

‘Splatoon 3’

A perfect example of “if it works, don’t touch it”: few new features for a game with such a unique and infallible formula that it’s best not to spoil the original idea with too many innovations. The fights with paint guns and modes such as the story or the cooperative Salmon-Run, the very peculiar horde version of ‘Splatoon 3’, are back.

  • September 9 on Switch.

‘Overwatch 2’

One of the most played multiplayer shooters in the world takes a swerve in its approach with its long-awaited sequel, going free-to-play. The great success of Blizzard will allow players to keep all their achievements and experience gained in the first installment and will come loaded with new modes and characters.

  • October 4 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.

‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’

After the relative disappointment of the Avengers game, it seems that the Marvel heroes will have the opportunity to make up for it in a proposal… of real-time strategy. Of course, it comes with an almost guaranteed quality seal: it is developed by Firaxis, the people who set up the acclaimed ‘XCOM’. An unexpected turn for Marvel in the middle, in a title that will allow us to control house characters like Ghost Rider, Wolverine or Blade, among many others.

  • October 7 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Switch.

‘A Plague Tale: Requiem’

‘A Plague Tale: Innocence’ became the indie sensation of a few years ago thanks to its sordid medieval setting and the emotional nature of its story, starring the brothers Amicia and Hugo. It is time to return for both, in a sequel that is an unequivocal continuation of its predecessor but that seems to propose a series of novelties that inject the necessary sense of change.

  • October 18 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.

‘Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope’

It is not the first time that two of the best-known Nintendo and UbiSoft franchises collide, but it is the time that it seems that they are going to understand each other more fluidly: we will find both genuine platform adventure and tactical and turn-based action. An idea that will be captured with the usual nonchalance of Mario and the Rabbids developed by Ubi and exclusively for the Nintendo hybrid.

‘scorn’

My particular favorite this year is this space horror game openly inspired by the worlds of HR Giger and his biomechanical nightmares, with as much emphasis on repulsive action as it does on a spooky atmosphere of alien flesh. It will be from day one on Game Pass, in what promises to be one of the most disturbing and nightmarish adventures of the year.

  • October 21 on PC and Xbox Series X / S.

‘Gotham Knights’

An open world action RPG starring the bat-family, but without the presence of Batman himself, who has mysteriously disappeared and is presumed dead by everyone. Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood will face the mysterious Court of Owls, one of the most suggestive nemesis of Bat Man in recent times, and his dangerous hired assassins, in a game that still has a lot to reveal in terms of development and focus, although spectacularity is guaranteed.

  • October 25 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

‘Bayonetta 3’

The long-awaited sequel to Platinum’s two extreme action classics arrives exclusively for the Nintendo console, coinciding with a physical re-release of the first installment. A game that, except for the arrival of new characters, promises to deliver more and better than seen so far. So it will possibly become one of the undisputed titles of the gun and stunt genre of 2022.

‘Pokemon Scarlet and Purple’

The second approach of ‘Pokémon’ to open worlds after ‘Pokémon Legends: Arceus’, released at the beginning of the year, comes with a very interesting incentive: one of the new territories of the game is clearly inspired by Spain, which has provided a warm-up based on these new installments in the form of a myriad of memes about the impact of Nintendo’s pocket monsters on our country. We will see how the new generation feels and the definitive jump to the open world to the inexhaustible franchise.

  • November 8 on Switch.

‘God of War Ragnarok’

After a few delays, it seems that the new installment of Kratos’ adventures is about to drop, again accompanied by his young son and continuing his quest for the total deicide of all the divinities that come before him. So far no gameplay has been seen, but the cinematics shown guarantee the constant levels of brutality and stoicism in the saga.

  • November 9 on PS4 and PS5.

‘STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl’

Fourth game in the franchise, first to come to consoles and first in the series in no less than 13 years. Impressive figures for a non-linear, dark and pessimistic action game that will put us back to battling radioactive monsters in inhospitable wastelands, with an abundance of retro technology and, possibly, a visual spectacular that will take your breath away. It was delayed due to the conflict in Ukraine, but it seems that it will definitely arrive at the end of the year.

  • December 8 on PC and Xbox Series X and S.

‘Return of Monkey Island’

LucasFilm Games and Devolver make common cause to bring us back one of the classic franchises of PC graphic adventures. In fact, Ron Gilbert himself is at the forefront of the return of his most popular creation, ‘Monkey Island’, which undergoes an amazing facelift but seems to keep all its sense of humor, setting and irreverence intact. One of the most anticipated retro titles of 2022.

  • To be determined on PC and other platforms.

‘Sonic Frontiers’

It is clear that this is the year in which old video game myths appear in open worlds. With all the limitations you want, but it is clear that for characters like Sonic they can be an absolute turnaround in the way we see classic characters. At the moment, we know that ‘Sonic Frontiers’ will not be a total sandbox, but it will inherit many of the tropes of the genre.

  • To be determined on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch.
