The merchants of Tibú recorded the informal detention they made of the young people. The videos went viral.

“They are very young, we don’t want to see them lying on the side of the road tomorrow.”

This is heard saying in a video to a merchant in the municipality of Tibú, in the northeast of Colombia, on the border with Venezuela. He and his neighbors in the area have two alleged thieves of Venezuelan origin being held, cornered, with their hands tied. They record them before handing them over to the authorities.

“They are under our responsibility,” adds the same merchant in the video.

The police, one of the merchants told BBC Mundo, “did not answer the phone 12 times we called them.”
