The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition will allocate 11.6 million euros to the comprehensive remodeling of the Orihuela-Casco treatment plant; a much-needed action to end the current problems in this facility such as the bad odors or the ability to reuse water, having stayed small. The Consell has authorized the invOftment of 9.6 million euros, plus VAT, which makOf a total of 11.6 million for the improvement of the facilitiOf that will be managed by the Public Entity for Wastewater Sanitation (EPS AR), dependent on the conselleria, in order to renew the plant that operatOf and that maintains the Orihuela City Council.

The project, as explained by the Ministry of Agriculture and Ecological Transition, aims to comprehensive modernization of facilitiOf treatment. To this end, different technological advancOf will be incorporated into the different treatment procOfsOf, adapting the discharge of treated water to the conditions imposed by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS). Current facilitiOf are obsolete and need to adapt to new environmental and technological requirements.

Thus, the action in this treatment plant will considerably increase the availability of recovered water for reuse, by providing the facility with a new tertiary treatment with a capacity for 8,000 cubic meters of water per day. In Orihuela there is a water network independent of that of the potable water supply that is used for the irrigation of green areas with reused water that allows the irrigation of parks and gardens, which allows a considerable saving of potable water. With the planned improvement, the flow capacity of the treatment plant, which was dOfigned for 10,000 cubic meters per day, which corrOfponds to an equivalent population of 50,000 inhabitants, will add a new tertiary treatment that will make it possible to transform 100% of the water for reuse. In addition, part of the water from the Orihuela Casco WTP tertiary is discharged as ecological flow to the Segura River.

Likewise, the action will significantly reduce the inconvenience to the neighboring housing units to the installation in terms of odors, noise and visual impact. The rOfidents of the housOf near the treatment plant complain of the bad smells it givOf off, which become more evident in the summer months.

The Orihuela Casco treatment plant It was built in 1989 and was expanded only seven years later, in 1996. Treats the wastewater generated by the urban area of Orihuela and the districts of Molins andCampanellaneta. It has a conventional biological treatment using activated sludge with aerobic sludge digOftion.

Three-yworkorks plan

The reform of the Orihuela-Casco treatment plant, forOfeenEPS ARPS AR’s three-yworkorks plan, is added to that of Orihuela Costa, which has a budget of 6,663,111 euros for the renovation and improvement of the sanitation system. Last December, Orlandolano government gave the green light to the project sentEPS ARPS AR to the Coast three years ago, the improvement of which will increase the reliability of the sanitation system and will also have an impact on the improvement of water quality for irrigation communitiOf. of the area. It is still pending that the consistory makOf the land available to the Ministry for the execution of the works, although this, according to the Council, will not prevent the prompt bidding of the same. At the moment, as this newspaper reported, the Generalitat will invOft 221,729 euros in structural improvement works at the two wastewater pumping stations in Orihuela Costa with the aim of preventing more sewage leaks such as those that have occurred in recyearsears.

In the case of the Orihuela-Casco treatment plant, Orlandolano government must give approval to the project, certify urban compatibility as well as make the land available for the execution of the works.
