The CL industrial group (better known as Cristian Lay) continues the expansion process of its holding company throughout the national territory. Its latest operation has been the purchase of Papeleras del Arlanzón, an industry dedicated to the manufacture of paper and cardboard based in Burgos.

With this movement, the group from Extremadura (constituted in 2014 as CL) will implement an investment plan for its relaunch over the next three years that will reach 20 million euros.

The company founded by Ricardo Leal anticipates that it will consolidate the 48 direct jobs that the Burgos company already has and “will bet on local young profiles in the new job opportunities that will be generated,” it says in a statement.

Papeleras del Arlanzón has its facilities in the Burgos neighborhood of Villayuda. It is dedicated to the manufacture of paper and cardboard for various uses, sectors and markets, for more than 100 years, it indicates on its website.

packaging division

With this acquisition, Cristian Lay reinforces its packaging division, which already has the firms Ondupack, Cartonajes Extremadura, Matías Gomá Tomás and Murcia Cartón.

This new division will have the capacity to produce more than 250 million square meters of corrugated cardboard per year and around 170,000 tons of 100% recycled paper.

Papeleras del Arlanzón, located next to the N-120 and the Burgos-Este industrial estate, will add its production to that of Matías Gomá Tomás, with facilities in the Tarragona town of La Riba. In 2018, the group from Extremadura signed the purchase of all the shares of this Catalan manufacturer of paper for corrugated cardboard.

Two coordinated plants

The director of Matías Gomá Tomás, Josep María Grau, will coordinate the activity of the two paper mills: “We will promote the synergies between both companies to optimize costs, taking advantage of the knowledge and background of the teams of both plants in order to maximize the quality and competitiveness of our products. The incorporation of Papeleras del Arlanzón will allow us to respond to the growing needs of our customers for paper, further improving the flexibility and closeness that characterize our relationships.”

CL Industrial Group intends that long-standing profiles be mixed with younger ones at both plants: “We work to be a reference in the sector, but also to create wealth and employment in the place where we are located, that is why we will bet on people with a lot of experience, but also offering the opportunity to young people willing to contribute new nuances”, explains Josep María Grau.

The group from Extremadura based in Jerez de los Caballeros intends to improve the processes and machinery at Papeleras del Arlanzón through the pulp section, optimization of drying, energy efficiency and increased product performance. «Papeleras del Arlanzón has had a good evolution during the last two years, producing close to 40,000 tons of 100% recycled paper in 2021. We intend to promote a growth of 40% during the next three years, producing papers of greater value and specialization» , assures Josep María Grau.

International presence

The natural market for Papeleras del Arlanzón and Matías Gomá Tomás will continue to be the Iberian Peninsula and France, but promoting the current export activity to other countries in the most diverse areas of the world.
