The Cuban Government shields the main cities to avoid a civic protest

Some 700,000 students returned to classrooms on Monday after months of confinement and distance classes. Ten international airports were opened to receive international tourists. The Cuban Government highlighted the return to normality but preferred to remain silent about the exceptional episodes. The main cities of the island are shielded to prevent the convocation of Archipelago from bearing fruit, the dissident collective that, like never before, has standing up to the authorities from that country. The platform, the result of the protests of the intellectuals against the censorship of November 2020, and the social outbreak of 11-J, has denounced intimidation of all kinds so that the adherents of the Civic Day do not go out into the streets dressed in white. More than a march, what has been sought is an inorganic summation of wills displaced by the cities and identified by the same color. The security forces tried to reduce these actions to a minimum. Arrests were also reported.

Numerous people, related to the Archipelago, have suffered fights and sieges in their homes, incited by the Communist Party (PPC). In the days leading up to 15-N, warnings proliferated in work centers. Several activists were visited by intelligence agents. The Government has no doubt that the protest is a destabilizing advanced promoted from the United States. The malaise does not seem, from the official perspective, to be related to the growing inequality among Cubans, nor with the effects of 6000% inflation on the black market or the outright failure of the economic order. Nor with the emergence of a new generation, educated in new technologies that, without necessarily feeling “pro-American”, are demanding new spaces for political participation.

The Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, considered that the protest was a “operation failed”, contrary to the “holiday” that the island had with the resumption of classes. What was sought, he added, is “to create an artificial image totally alien to what is happening on the streets today.” Rodríguez made no mention of mobs and other forms of harassment.

The birth of a leadership

The dramatist Yunior Garcia Aguilera It is the visible face of the movement that has summoned citizens to protest in the most “imaginative” way and without exposing themselves to situations of violence. He, for his part, proposed last Sunday to walk alone through the Havana center, all in white and with a flower, also white, invoked by José Martí, the national hero, in one of his poems, as a symbol destined for his friend that gives “his frank hand” and for “the cruel one who tears me out.” The official Granma newspaper repudiation the use of that poetry by a dissident. “White color is not for sale“. The playwright could not leave his house. The window was covered with a giant Cuban flag.

The figure of García Aguilera has become a symbol. The great singer and songwriter Pablo Milanes He came to his defense and dedicated an old song to him, “Flowers of the future.” Milanés, for several decades one of the cultural referents of Castroism, together with Silvio Rodríguez, expressed his “contempt” by the repressive device and the presence of “crowds“to intimidate opponents.” My support for Yunior Garcia Aguilera and all the Cubans that he represents and who fight inside and outside of Cuba. It is beautiful that we coincide in showing our claim to absolute freedoms through flowers, “he wrote on his Facebook profile.”I am ashamed of others that people of my race lend themselves to be like the ancients maroon hunters of his own torture and pain, “he added, alluding to the fate of rebellious slaves in the 19th century.”They are using them. Wake up! “, claimed the author of “Years.”

Russia’s position

Moscow accused Washington of promoting the protests. “We note a sudden increase in recent months in the US policy of destabilization of the situation on the island, stimulating the spirit of protest from abroad, including through social networks,” said María Zajárova, spokesperson for the Russian ministry of Exteriors. The march, he recalled, has not received permission from the Cuban government. Russia denounced that “senior officials”, including the Secretary of State, Antony Blink, and US diplomatic representatives in Havana have summoned through their words to “reverse the current constitutional order“. According to Zajárova,”from abroad the atmosphere is heated artificially ” and the consequences of the unprecedented strengthening of the sanctioning policy are “silenced” by the White House.
