Today, Thursday, the Bay of Palma was the setting for the premiere of the entire fleet of the Superyacht Cup Palma, the longest-running superyacht regatta in Europe, which in its 26th edition brings together eleven boats between 24 and 46 meters in length.

With a slightly lighter breeze than in the inaugural J-Class regatta, Pantaenius Race Day once again had excellent conditions that allowed the fleet to show its power in a disputed coastal regatta of more than three hours.

The spectacular four J-Class have competed independently from the rest of the class, in a test marked from the beginning by the decision division, with Velsheda taking a bold course to the right and Svea, Topaz and Ranger heading towards the left side of the countryside.

But on this occasion fortune had not favored the brave, and Velsheda’s course towards Palmanova on the western side of the Bay of Palma proved not to be the best option, as the other J-Class contenders took the first mark with a considerable margin.

Meanwhile, the elegant 27m Savannah led the rest of the Superyacht Cup fleet, leading the first in a series of staggered starts that have filled the bay with impressive superyachts.

Competing in Class B, the 27m Pedrick-designed Savannah has had to work hard to match the pace of rivals such as the 46m Ganesha, the mighty Oyster 1225 Archelon and the cruiser La Belle, but after compensation from times has taken the victory in its class.

“The committee have put together a magnificent course, there were some really good pockets of breeze, it’s clear they’ve chosen the course carefully,” Savannah owner Hugh Morrison said. “Luckily we hit some, so it’s been a good day.”

In relation to the next two days of regatta, he added: “It’s going to be a fantastic competition with great sailors and amazing boats. Conditions are expected to be stronger tomorrow, so we’ll just try to hold on, push on and do the best we can.”

Class A has seen a struggle for supremacy between the Farr-designed 32-meter Kiboko 3 carbon unit and the Pattoo sloop, another 33-meter-long high-performance boat, which has resulted in a final victory for first. Both boats put on an exciting show as they traversed the eastern side of the bay, framed by the sheer cliffs of Badia Gran.

The owner and skipper, Juan Entrecanales, assured: “We are happy with today’s result, the conditions have been good. Although we started late, we have been able to keep going”. About the origin of his name, Kiboko -which means hippopotamus in Swahili-, he says: “The ship was built in Cape Town and I wanted it to reflect its African roots. A hippopotamus is fast, fat yes, but fast too, and the name sounds good”.

The J-Class has also experienced a very close competition, with victory for Svea in the Pantaenius Race Day, a victory that has allowed him to be at the head of the podium, just one point behind the leader of the class, Topaz. Ranger was third in today’s test, with Velsheda completing the table.

After the regattas, owners, crews, sponsors and guests have been able to enjoy the North Sails & Southern Spars Happy Hour and the day’s trophy presentation on the terrace of the RCN Palma, venue of the event. Tomorrow Friday the competition continues with the New Zealand Race Day, which will be followed on Saturday by the last day of regatta with the St. Regis Race Day, by the sponsoring hotel, St. Regis Mardavall.

In addition to the official Jaquet Droz watch and those mentioned above, the Superyacht Cup Palma has the following Silver Partners: Astilleros de Mallorca, Evolution Sails, Gottifredi Maffioli, RSB Rigging, Marinepool, Vitters Shipyard, Baltic Yachts and Hoek Design.
