The field opens the doors of Feval

Don Benito woke up this morning with a large police deployment to guarantee the security of the field demonstration after the incidents that occurred on February 22 during the visit of Pedro Sánchez.

However, farmers and ranchers completed their journey peacefully, without incident and with the agents accompanying the march a few meters from the protesters who walked from the bus station to Feval, where today a new edition of Agroexpo begins that has not had an inauguration official or visit of authorities in this start.

The request for fair prices and the call for a table on drought at the regional level have been the main demands of the demonstration called by Asaja (APAG Extremadura Asaja and Asaja Cáceres), La Unión Extremadura, Aseprex, Agryga, Farmers Association of Don Benito and the Association of Farmers of the Valle del Jerte and Northern Regions of Extremadura.

“We cannot depend on a national table. We ask that solutions be given once and for all to the problems we have in the field, “said Juan Metidieri, president of Apag Extremadura, who has requested that the drought table be convened at the regional level.

Farmers and ranchers were also supported by students, health workers, neighbors and elders from buildings such as the nursing home, the specialty center or the institute that are located on Alonso Martín Avenue in the Badajoz town of Don Benito. “The field is all of us,” they have shouted to applause from the balconies.

“We need certainty in the short term, so that farmers know what we are going to be able to do. Many have begun to prepare the land and do not know if they will have water to be able to irrigate,” said Natalia García-Camacho, president of the Association of Farmers and Ranchers of Don Benito and Comarca.

“We are not going to leave more than 5,000 farmers without power. The Madrid drought table is not worth it to us,” said Luis Cortés, president of La Unión Extremadura. “It is a very calm demonstration, we are not going to burst Feval, but if next week we do not have the drought table convened, let the Minister know that we are going to go to the Presidency.”

The arrival at Feval occurred two hours later, without the situation experienced two years ago when a confrontation took place between protesters and riot police.

At the setting of the institution, microphone in hand, representatives of all the convening associations have intervened with a speech in which the claims have been distributed just after making a minute of silence for the situation in Ukraine. All of them have claimed the absence of violence in this demonstration, in addition to asking for solutions to the water problems or the rise in the price of supplies. On the other hand, reference has been made to the absence of UPA-UCE in this manifestation.

“If the fields remain empty, within a few decades there will be no one to fix it. You all do very well to be here because they have to listen to you». They were the words of the priest and writer, Jesús Sánchez-Adalid, in charge of putting the finishing touch to the demonstration already at the gates of Feval.

After the interventions and despite the fact that the doors of Agroexpo had been open for just over two hours, the protesters have declared what they consider to be their party to be inaugurated and have begun to tour some pavilions that were already breathing a certain normality after two years marked by the pandemic .
