The International Sailing Week City of Santander hoists sails

The Real Club Marítimo de Santander has hosted the presentation of the 7th City of Santander International Sailing Week in an act that the Mayor of Santander Gema Igual and the Councilor for Sports Felipe Pérez, in addition to the Naval Commander of Santander Carlos Bonaplata, wanted to support. , the General Director of Sports of the Government of Cantabria Mario Iglesias, together with the President of the RCMS Fernando Pereda.

On this occasion, the International Week will feature two events of national significance, such as the J80 Spanish Cup and the Juan Sebastián Elcano Trophy for the Optimist and 420 class. The Snipe class will be in charge of opening the program (as a preview of the Week this same weekend) with the XLII Rafael Sanz Memorial and the XXV Juan de Dios Valenzuela Memorial, while the closure will feature the classic SAR Don Felipe de Borbón-Cantabria Infinita trophy for cruise ships.

The two weeks of competition will start with a category with a great tradition in Cantabria such as the J80 class, which has given the region world champions such as José María Torcida or Ignacio Camino and several national champions.

25 boats from all over Spain will moor in Puertochico in search of a national title that will be very expensive. The J80 Cup of Spain will be held at the opening of Santander Bay from June 16 to 19.

After the J80 monotypes, it will be the turn of the Optimist and 420 classes, the cradle of future champions. In this edition, as Fernando Pereda has highlighted, the International Sailing Week offers an important space in its programming for this national sailing academy.

The training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano will be the “mentor” of the youngest sailors with the trophy that, together with the V Centerario, bears his name and with which different activities will be held.

The Real Club Marítimo de Santander has promoted in a very important way this quarry of very young Cantabrians who train every weekend at the RCMS Regatta School and who will take over from the already established local sailors with whom they share their passion for the sea.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano V Centenary Trophy of Optimist and 420 will feature a hundred boats from the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, Asturias or Cantabria, and will be held between June 21 and 23. The closing of this next edition of the International Week of Vela Ciudad de Santander will be provided by the powerful Cantabria cruise fleet that will compete for the SAR Don Felipe de Borbón-Cantabria Infinita trophy.

The City of Santander International Sailing Week is the legacy of the great 2014 World Championship of Olympic classes and the 2017 World Cup Final Series, and has the support of the Santander City Council, the Port of Santander, the Government of Cantabria, La Sociedad, Lebaniego Jubilee Year, Sport Cantabria, IMD and V Centenary of the trip around the world.
