The «la Caixa» Foundation, through the Call for International Cooperation to collaborate with Spanish non-governmental organizations for development (NGDO) in projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, has allocated 30.887 euros to a project to promote the right to health and food safety of five indigenous Mayan communities in Uspantán, Guatemala, promoted by Solidaridad Internacional País Valenciano, together with a local partner, Asociación para el Desarrollo Comunitario-SIEMBRA. The main actions planned in this project are the following:
– Strengthen agroecological food production in private plots for self-consumption and marketing of the surplus.
– Promote local markets and an agroecological cooperative.
– Improve basic sanitation, with equipment and training to prevent the spread of diseases.
International Cooperation to collaborate with ONGD
At this time when the world is experiencing the emergency caused by covid-19 and its consequences, which mainly affect developing countries, the «La Caixa» Foundation, through its International Area, reinforces its commitment to International cooperation and the Spanish entities that are implementing projects in these countries.
The objective of this call in its first edition is contribute to the fight against poverty and inequalities through initiatives that improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations.
In total they have been selected 19 projects in three fields of action: socio-economic development, health improvement and promotion of education and training.
The autonomous communities with initiatives Selected are: Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Community of Madrid, Community of Navarra and the Valencian Community.
The Projects They will be developed in the following countries: Bolivia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Nicaragua, DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Zambia.
Committed to sustainable development
The 19 projects selected have objectives as diverse as the female empowerment; improvement in access to drinking water; the care for the most vulnerable children, the improvement of maternal and child health; promoting the right to education, the Health Yet the security food, access to a Decent job and the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness, among others.
Thus, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Most directly linked to these projects are SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality education) and SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth).
This Call for International Cooperation reaffirms the commitment of the «La Caixa» Foundation with the Sustainable Development Goals and United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda.
