The left of France advances towards its unity as a counterweight to Macron

The French left advanced this Wednesday towards the union requested by the leader of La Francia Insumisa (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, that allows him to obtain a majority in the legislative elections and stop the policies of the newly elected president, Emmanuel Macron. A delegation from the Socialist Party (PS) held a meeting at the LFI headquarters at the end of which they confirmed that “there are no insurmountable obstacles”, according to the socialist negotiator Pierre Jouvet.

The meeting was described as “historic” by LFI since the Socialists had so far rejected any contact with Mélenchon’s party, who left the PS 14 years ago to launch a leftist movement. But the relationship of forces has been reversed. Mélenchon finished third in the first round of the presidential elections with almost 22% of the votes and became the great referent of the French leftwhile the socialist candidate, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, it sank to 1.75%.

The delegations of both parties agreed to continue negotiating and set a deadline of next weekend to complete an alliance. A position that not everyone appreciates within the Socialist Party, where there are voices that warn of the danger of dissolving within LFI while others consider it necessary to save the furniture and avoid bankruptcy.

Campaign in the ‘banlieue’

retain the control of the National Assembly it is crucial for Macron, who is seeking the support of left-wing voters. For this reason, in his first displacement after being re-elected, Macron traveled to the Parisian ‘banlieue’, where he was a victim of throwing several tomatoes that did not impact him, during a visit to a market in a city in the Parisian region, reports Efe.

As I passed the stalls of a market in Cergy-Pontoise, several cherry tomatoes (which are the size of a cherry) flew near him, while his security service moved quickly to remove him and open an umbrella. Macron did not speak about the incident in subsequent statements to the media, in which members of his security service could be seen a little nervous, among the crowd that he wanted to raise complaints or questions, or simply say hello to the president. .

In his remarks, Macron again showed a very moderate tone ahead of the June National Assembly elections, saying he was going to “try to reconcile the French.” He also promised to appoint a prime minister “involved in the social, environmental and productive issue”, in another of the nods to the left that he has launched in recent weeks.
