The Libera Project collects garbage at 32 river points in Extremadura from this Saturday until March 20

The Libera Project, from SEO/BirdLife in alliance with Ecoembes, once again launches its citizen science campaign ‘1m2 for rivers, lakes and reservoirs’, from this Saturday until March 20, with garbage collection in 32 river points of Extremadura, coinciding with the International Day of Rivers, which is celebrated every March 14.

Among the 32 collection and characterization points organized in Extremadura are the surroundings of the Hermitage of San Isidro de Trujillanos (Badajoz, March 12), the Bañaero area in Cuacos de Yuste (Cáceres, March 12), the vicinity of the Guadiana river as it passes through Mérida (March 14), the banks of the Alange reservoir (Badajoz, March 15), the area of the Jerte river in Cabezuela del Valle (Cáceres, March 15), the bank of the Ibor river in Castañar de Ibor (Cáceres, March 17) or the Puente de Alcántara area (Cáceres, March 17).

It is worth highlighting the work of the organizers to determine the points where the characterizations and collections will be carried out. Among them are the municipalities of Maguilla or Casar de Cáceres, organizations such as the Cornalvo Natural Park Interpretation Center, Adenex, the Cueva Castañar Interpretation Center, the Alcántara Interpretation Center, the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation, the Cuacos de Yuste Environmental Education Center and natural spaces such as the Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve.

In Spain, more than 5,000 volunteers are going to remove garbage from 370 river points in the country. The collaboration of all, the organization has highlighted, makes it possible to rid river environments of garbage and, thanks to the use of the ‘eLitter’ app, created by Clean Landscape and Zero Discharges in collaboration with Libera, the participants can characterize the waste found to thus being able to study where they come from and their typology. All the information obtained is integrated directly into the database of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) and will be reflected in the ‘Garbage Barometer’ of the Libera Project.

It is “an environmental problem that urgently needs to be dealt with” in order to “maintain a healthy and safe planet”, the organization of this activity has highlighted.

In the last edition of ‘1m2 for rivers, lakes and reservoirs’, up to 6.4 tons of rubbish were removed, of which more than 75,000 residues were characterized. 338 action points were reached in river environments distributed throughout the country and more than 4,000 volunteers were mobilized.

By type of waste, the most found objects at the national level were plastic pieces less than 2.5 centimeters, cigarette butts and wet wipes.
