The man who killed his son in Barcelona committed suicide a few hours later

There have been 23 days of searching, by land, sea and air, until this past Tuesday, at 1:15 p.m., the Mossos d’Esquadra they located the corpse of Martin Ezequiel Alvarez in a wooded area with difficult access, close to the Barcelona-El Prat airport, in whose surroundings a taxi driver saw him for the last time. The man who allegedly killed his two-year-old son in a room at the Concordia Hotel on August 24 hanged himself with his own belt, a few hours after the crime, according to the Catalan police.

It was agents of the Underwater Unit who located the body of the suspect, hanging from a tree, in an area of ”difficult access”, with thick and high vegetation, as detailed by the inspector Josep Naharro, head of the Criminal Investigation Division (DEC) of Barcelona. “A place that had no access by air or land,” he added. In fact, an inspection by land and with a drone had already been carried out there, without success.

The main hypothesis is that Álvarez agreed by jumping over the access fences, near the terminal 1, and that the intention, when choosing this space, was not to find his body. It was not until this morning that the results of the fingerprint evidence they have confirmed “100%” that the body was that of the suspect. The “strong smell of putrefaction” was what alerted the agents who found him. The weather conditions – heat and humidity – to which he has been subjected during these days, have forced him to be certified in this way, although according to police sources, the clothing was the same as the one he was wearing on the day of the crime, and in his The wallet had pictures of the little boy, which left little room for doubt.

A hundred tracks

“We have not detected any indication that this person had planned the crime. Neither to commit the crime, nor to commit suicide later, ”said Naharro, who explained that during these days they have kept all lines of investigation open: from flight to suicide. For this reason, the boy’s family, including his mother, has had police protection.

Until the case is clarified, the Mossos They have investigated a hundred clues about the possible whereabouts of the suspect, after the Corps released his image a day after the crime to request citizen collaboration and thus be able to locate him. None have been helpful. From the alert by a hitchhiker who got into a vehicle in Barcelona and ended up in Figueras and who turned out to be a Dutch tourist, or peasants who alerted that someone was stealing fruit from them and that he could be the alleged murderer.

Since 2008, seven minors have been murdered by their parents in Catalonia, as cases of vicarious violence, that is, with the intention of causing the maximum pain to their mothers. In six of them, according to the police, the men also killed the parents.
