The Marble Chair starts at the UA with a debate on the sustainability of the sector

The University of Alicante and the Department of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Commerce and Labor have created the Marble Chair, an initiative that was presented in society last Friday and whose objective is to carry out activities of training, research, studies, dissemination, dissemination and promotion of the knowledge related to the marble sector that allows to improve its development from the aspects of sustainability, occupational safety and competitiveness.

The new institutional chair of the University of Alicante also began its activity with the seminar “Strategies on circular economy, digitization and sustainability in the marble sector: towards a new business model”, in which the professor of the University of Valencia, Inmaculada Revuelta Pérez, participated, who spoke about “What is the Circular Economy and its legal regulation”; University of Alicante, José Luis Pastor, who discussed the “Revaluation of Construction Waste, with special dedication to marble dust”; and the also professor at the UA, Bartolomé Marco, who discussed the “Sustainable Business Model”.

In the presentation of the Chair of Marble, the secretary general of the University of Alicante, Esther Algarra, highlighted the commitment of the Alicante institution to institutional chairs as “an important instrument to carry out stable collaboration between the university, companies and institutions”, which, he stressed, “represents a useful and functional tool to make effective the transfer of knowledge from the university to the socioeconomic fabric “and gave an example of the chair that was presented for its” importance to accompany the marble sector in its transition to a new business model in which knowledge must play a fundamental role ”.

For his part, Empar Martínez, insisted that “the industry You need the knowledge that comes from the universities to be able to make an orderly transition in your business model. Are needed technological, legal or economic solutions among others, and they are not born out of nowhere, you need the support of the university ”.

The new institutional chair of the University of Alicante that finances the Department of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Commerce and Labor will have as director the professor of Architectural Projects of the Higher Polytechnic School, Javier Sánchez Merina.

Among the objectives that the chair has set, it is worth highlighting the carrying out of a study and proposal of strategic actions on circular economy, digitization and sustainability in the marble sector. It is about analyzing the current business model of the industry in all its phases, extractive, transforming and marketing, trying to adapt it to a sustainable model. It will also produce a “White Paper” that analyzes the experiences, weaknesses and strengths of the sector and makes prospects for the future.

The chair was born with a clear international projection through collaboration in research projects and the Marble Chair International Architecture Competition, aimed at students of European architecture schools on the Sustainability of Natural Stone.
