The Moors and Christians of Novelda have achieved the declaration of a Festival of Autonomous Tourist Interest, a distinction that gives a seal of quality to festivals with more than fifty years of history that have become one of the main tourist attractions in the municipality. The distinction fills a long-awaited aspiration, both from the Federation of Comparsas de Moros y Cristianos Santa María Magdalena and the City Council itself, and paradoxically comes in the year in which, due to the restrictions imposed to stop the coronavirus pandemic, it has not been possible celebrate any act.
The mayor, Fran Martínez, and the acting president of the Federation of Comparsas de Moros y Cristianos, José Eugenio Pérez Flores, have shown their “satisfaction” after learning the “magnificent news” that is the decision of the Generalitat Valenciana to grant the Moors and Christians festivities, which Novelda traditionally celebrates between July 19 and 25, the declaration of Autonomous Tourist Interest.
Fran Martínez wanted to congratulate and thank the “titanic work” carried out both by the Central Board, as well as by the municipal areas of Festivals and Tourism, to achieve this declaration in “record time”. A distinction that “puts our parties in the place they deserve: among the best in the province and in the Valencian Community.” Also, the first mayor pointed out during the appearance outside the festival venue that the declaration of Autonomous Tourist Interest for the Moors and Christians festivities of Novelda could have a significant economic impact on the municipality since it increases its attractiveness, puts them in the agendas of tour operators and, therefore, the number of visitors interested in knowing and enjoying them increases. For his part, the acting president of the Federation of Comparsas de Moros y Cristianos, José Eugenio Pérez, declared himself “happy” before a concession that culminates an elaborate aspiration of the Central Board. But, at the same time, he appealed to partygoers and all citizens to continue working on improving a celebration that, as he stressed, has a “magnificent quality that, sometimes, we do not value.”
Three thousand festeros
Seven comparsas and three thousand festeros participate in a celebration that in 2019 attracted some 7,000 visitors, according to the data kept by the Federation of Comparsas. The economic impact reached two million euros, which had a direct impact on sectors such as hotels and restaurants, music, costume making or pyrotechnics.
«Since the Moors and Christians festivities of Novelda were founded in 1969, throughout these more than 50 years we have seen them grow, little by little, step by step, learning and taking the example of their sisters, the traditional festivals of neighboring towns. Later, and already adopting the independence that some years walking gave him, new and certain acts were included with which it was possible to make a difference and make our parties something special and, in some aspects, unique “, it is indicated from the manager . «And on this occasion, with the enthusiasm that overwhelms us for having been able to take another leap in the recognition that the celebration deserves, we also remember all the people who have passed through our parties in all these years, as well as those who they are still present, despite the adversities we are experiencing, ”concludes the acting president, José Eugenio Pérez.
