The new 100% electric Peugeot 308 will arrive in 2023

Peugeot remains faithful to its proposal for multi-energy platforms. The French brand, which already has models such as the 208, 2008 and 3008, among others, continues to increase its market offer with the 308 range. after the versions diesel, gasoline and plug-in hybrid, it is expected that in july 2023 Start serial production of Peugeot e-308, the 100% electric version of the compact that will be offered in both the family body (SW) and the five-door saloon. With this, the 308 is the first model of the brand that receives all the mechanical technologies.

The new Peugeot e-308 has the mission of cover 20% of sales of the model in its first year, leaving another 20% to the plug-in hybrid version. With this commitment to electrification, the French brand proposes a solution tailored to the user. Being a larger model, the e-308 offers a 156 hp electric motor (115kW) which is 20 hp more than the versions of the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, although in fact it is the same type of engine. The brand announces a torque of 270 Nm.

The battery is 54 kWh, only 4 kWh more than its little brothers. With this you get a autonomy between refills about 400 kilometers, although the brand has not wanted to refine further until it reaches the market. What is clear is that it is a high figure if we compare it with competing models that are equipped with higher capacity batteries. As confirmed by the head of the Peugeot 308 project, Agnes Tesson-Faget “This is the best battery in terms of efficiency on the market.”

More efficient battery

In the exclusive presentation for the members of the jury of the Car OfThe Year Car OfThe Year(among which we are), those responsible for Peugeot announced that “it is a model that pursues the logical evolution of the market.” For this they confirmed the bet in the two body versions. The development of the new Peugeot e-308 has been made at the same time of another ‘cousin’ of the Stellantis group, the Opel Astra, which has also announced a 100% electric variant and which is also planned for the market in 2023.

The efficiency of the battery must be found in its composition. The cells are made with cathodes with chemistry NCM 811 containing 80% nickel, 10% cobalt and 10% manganese. By carrying less cobalt than traditional ones, it increases its energy density and with it the real capacity of the battery while maintaining the same volume and weight. The consumption could approach the 12,5 KWh every 100 kilometers travelled.

This battery can charge 80% in just half an hour if we use a 100 kW DC charger. It will also allow recharging in single-phase or three-phase alternating current through a Mennekes connector, with which it can go from 10 to 80% charge in just over half an hour at a high-power station.

The Peugeot e-308 is mounted on the EMP-2 platform, something new since it was not initially planned for electric cars, but a good compromise of weights and spaces has been achieved dividing the battery into two different blocks. Batteries are traditionally either a single flat piece or have a ‘T’ shape.

Is located under the cabin floor but it occupies the free spaces under the seats, maintaining dimensions inside for the passengers. With this it is possible to maintain the same trunk volume than the plug-in hybrid version, with about 361 liters available (the combustion versions offer a capacity of 412 liters). They also guarantee the same habitability inside and the same dimensions.

As for the weight, Peugeot confirms that it will be around 1.600 kilos, just like the plug-in hybrid versions it already has on the market.
